Avanquest virus

Today something was automatically downloaded to my computer as I was browsing…a message popped up saying my computer was infected with a virus and I needed to activate Avanquest (purchase). I ignored it but kept getting popup messages. Soon Firefox crashed and wouldn’t start again, saying files were infected by a virus. I finally got a message from Avast that a virus had been detected, but the Avanquest would not let me “move to chest” telling me the Avast files were infected. Help???

By logging onto my other administrator userid, I was able to uninstall the Avanquest software, and logged onto this Avast site. I have not yet logged back onto my regular userid for fear. When I look at the Avast virus protection, it says it is working and there are 0 viruses.

Why couldn’t it be moved to the chest, e.g. what avast error message ?

Or you could enable a boot time scan. From the avast UI, Scan Computer, Boot-time Scan, Schedule Now button and reboot.

Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\report\aswBoot.txt file, check this file using notepad for info on the scan/detections, etc.

Is this a new rogue AV using exactly the same name as a legitmate software company name?(or so my searches are revealing)

Actually, it doesn’t really look like a rogue, but it sure does look like a rip-off of avast…

I disabled the link just in case it is a rogue, but avast didn’t alert me when I visited the page.

@ scythe944

agreed on that point. I was on that link, and a few other avanquest links before i posted. I didnt have any alarms go off. It seems like a real company. I just found it odd that the OP had a fake scanner with the same name. I guess time will tell huh.
