avasst 4 stops internet

i’ve been using avast for almost a year now, and loved. three days ago, apparently out of nowhere, my internet stopped working. i couldnt connect to the internet at all. i am connected to the internet through a router, but my laptop is able to connect. after i uninstalled avast, i could connect. then i re-installed it, and again couldn’t connect. so my lack of internet connection is somehow linked to the presence of avast. can someone help me>

It is more likely connected to your firewall (blocking the Web Shield), which is ?

Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

DavidR, can you explain how to do this please, im not exactly the brightest bulb when it comes to computers :-[

I can’t explain what I don’t know, you haven’t said what your firewall is ?

There would normally be an icon in the try next to the clock for your firewall.

In the mean time, left click the avast ’ a ’ icon, and select the Web Shield provider, see image and Terminate it, that should allow you to connect but still have a degree of protection from the standard shield.

If you don’t see the same image as shown, then there should be a Details… >> button, click that and from the other window use the scroll to find and then select the web shield.

the only firewall i use is window’s firewall. i tried disabling the web shield. i even terminated all the protection, but i still couldnt access it.

Well the windows firewall provides zero outbound protection so shouldn’t be in the picture.

Then there is some other issue (this would normally be a conflict of some sort), if you have disabled (don’t know what that means, terminated is what I suggested) the web shield and you terminated all protection (again I don’t know what you did here) and there is no difference.

What other security software do you have ?

i dont have any other security software. and yeah, terminated, not disabled. i terminated all of the protection, not just the web shield, but still can’t access the internet. i can still ping thru the command prompt.

I had the same problem, starting just the other day when I received notice that a new version was available, and I updated to version 4.8. My internet (on wireless router) suddenly started going out and I could not access the “Wireless Network Connection” icon in the system tray. All the other icons in the tray seemed to be active, but I had to restart my system to get the internet back. When I shut down, I kept getting messages that programs, seemingly related to the system tray, were shutting down, albeit slowly, and I manually shut them down. Then, when I got those shut down, my desktop appeared, and the system froze at that point. This never happened before, until I upgraded my software. (I’m now running version 4.8 Home Edition on Windows XP). Prior to this, I was having problems shutting down my system, where the “Windows is Shutting Down” screen would display and then freeze. This only occurred after installing Avast, and had never happened before. So, the problems seem to be getting worse with each update. I could use some help with this. I’ve also posted this as a separate topic, just a few minutes ago. :frowning:

All I can suggest is a clean reinstall as the usual culprits you have checked or are not applicable.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

Do you use Zone Alarm ? As one of the latest windows updates confuses ZA and it blocks internet connection. Workaround, Uninstal ZA and then download the latest patched version
