AVAST 2014 (9.0.2006) problem

I’m running Windows 8.1 RTM and have looked to re-load Avast 2014. It loads fine but if I try running it I get:

The instruction at 0x623e6ae0 referenced memory at 0x0bfb9ff0. The memory could not be read.

If I hit the OK button Avast is terminated and the Explorer shell freezes.

The only solution at that point is to leave that dialog on screen and uninstall Avast.

I’ve read through most of the threads on site and have gone through the clean out processes and none of them make any difference.

I’m hoping that when we get the patches through tomorrow to update the RTM build to the official release it’ll work but I’m not hopeful.

Any ideas how to fix would be appreciated as I do not want to change AV as I’m a long standing AVAST user and love the product!

Well I updated my PC to release from RTM last night and alas still the same issue.

No response in here either so it looks like I’ll be looking for a new AV client.

Did you do a clean install or updated over the top ?

A clean install after complete removal.

Try a clean install again but this time use the online installer :
Avast Free: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe
Avast Pro: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup_online.exe
Avast IS: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_online.exe
Avast Premier: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_online.exe

I don’t know why but I had problems with the offline installer but not with the online one… it doesn’t serve any technical difference.

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

Just tried as you recommended with alas the exact same problem.

If you install the release over the top of 8.1 RTM then you will loose all your installed programmes

Where do you get these online installers from? I can’t find them anywhere.

Erm no, RTM updates to release via Windows Update. That was checked with Brandon Leblanc.

Interestingly enough I decided to give Avast 9 another try at the office (separate license) and noticed that the file size of the installer had changed.

When the original installer was downloaded on the 16th of October is was 121,506,128 bytes, but when downloaded today it is 121,680,752 bytes - 1.74624Mb bigger!

I’m therefore wondering if the installer has been updated to fix Windows 8.1 install issues?

Fingers are firmly crossed and I’ll try it at home tonight!

Alas still the same issue at home :frowning:

Well I’m overjoyed to say that after a long struggle (removing all files from the prior install attempts) and removing all traces of Avast from the registry that Avast 9 finally loaded on my home PC.

This is a great relief as my license runs until January 2015 and of all the competing products I’ve tried I’ve had issues:

  • Bitdefender - issues with the firewall
  • F-Secure - limited control over the system, trial can not be reloaded
  • Kaspersky - unstable, slowed down Outlook 2013 and tended to suffer from loading failures

I may not be overjoyed with some of the Avast 9 UIX changes and the embedded adverts for other services but at least it works with little CPU impact, etc.

I wonder! ::slight_smile:

They are in avast! Support FAQs

Perfect! Thank you. The file is rather in an unconventional place.

I installed with the online installer and it seems to be working better (so far).

The version is 2014.9.2007 instead of 2014.9.2006.

I will be so happy if I can have Avast again.
