When opening Outlook Express I get unable to connect to server. I’m able to access the mail server by disabling Avast Mail Shield. Once I do this, I can re-enable Mail Shield and the problem goes away for a day or so. I keep forgetting to take a screenshot of the error.
Please, take the screenshot or, at least, write down the full error message. Thanks.

It hasn’t happened since posting this thread. Also I just installed the latest program update: 2014.9.0.2008 with no problems so far.

It started happening again about 2 weeks ago but I haven’t had time to post here. I’m able to correct the error by disabling Mail Shield, log into my email, then re-enable Mail Shield. It happens about once out of every 10 or so times logging into my email.

hi,
with version 2014.9.0.2011, I have the same problem with Thunderbird, no error message, but a bubble on the icon in the task bar “connection closed gracefully”!
deactivating agent mail, I can connect and read my e-mails,
with version 2014.9.0.2008 no problem

Still getting the same error only now I cannot send emails anymore using Outlook Express. I tried reinstalling Avast but I still get the same error, I’m assuming Avast has corrupted OE somehow? I can receive email but I can no longer send. There have been no updates to OE in quite some time so it is not related to MS Updates. I have not made any changes myself so that narrows it down to Avast.

OK, I ended up reinstalling Avast and replacing Outlook Express with Thunderbird, I think that was inevitable. But my problem still remained? I finally figured out what was happening. One, I repeat, one of my outgoing email port numbers was changed in OE settings. I did not change it and I’m currently the only one using this computer. I don’t know if an Avast update could done something like that? I suspect something else was the culprit but I have no idea what?
Anyway the problem has been resolved yet again.
Damn gremlins.
