Avast 2014.. Install seems OK, but remains Unprotected.

My free trial of the previous avast ran out. I uninstalled it, and downloaded the latest 2014 version. Install seems to be fine and says complete.

Then the main screen loads as “You are unprotected!” The avast service is off…self defense is off. I click Resolve All, Start or Turn On endlessly, and it does absolutely nothing.

I tried uninstalling, and reinstalling… I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Avast 7… Also unsecure after setup completes, will not resolve.

I tried running avastclear in Safe Mode, and then doing a clean install with Avast 2014… Same problem.

Only one error returns, and thats when I try to UNINSTALL through add/remove programs.

“There was an error during product installation” <— (Weird, cause I’m doing an un-install)

After uninstalling your free trial via add/remove did you use the avast uninstall utility?

  1. Download and save http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
  2. Download and save your preference…
    http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
    http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
    http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
    http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe
  3. Run uninstaller from step 1 (you will be prompted to reboot into safe mode…do so)
  4. Reboot
  5. Install selection from step 2 and reboot
  6. Register

I always use the uninstall utility in add/remove programs. It worked fine when I installed the previous version that expired. After I installed this one, it gives me the error that there is an installation problem and doesn’t allow me to continue.

I guess I’ll do the clean install again like suggested, but I doubt it’s going to matter.

Followed every step…still no luck. Also, went to settings and entered in my registered avast account to connect My Devices. “We could not connect your device to Avast account! Please try again later…”

What do I do??

If you are infected then it may be stopping Avast from working

See this thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 then create a topic in the virus and worms forum

I have run MBAM, and have no malware infected… What now.

Same issue. Win 7 x64. Install was fine, but says “you are unprotected”. hitting start or resolve all does NOTHING. Have to go back to AVG until they can fix this… can’t rely on a poorly designed update to keep me protected

Same thing. says “you are unprotected”, resolve all and start do NOTHING. have to go back to AVG until they can fix this poorly designed update. Gotta keep viruses out somehow.

I was having the same issue, and then found another forum that said to use the avastclean.exe program, which will make you go to safe mode. run it, then reboot into safe mode again and do a clean install of the new Avast from safe mode. I tried it, and it worked for me.

JOLLYWOLF. Have you tried adwcleaner from explode! to check for malware?. IF YOU HAVE USED AVG OR ANY OTHER ANTIVIRUS THEN YOU WILL NEED TO RUN THIER UNINSTAL PROGRAM BEFORE USING AVAST

THANNKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

Really appreciate you replying with what worked for you. Avast, I hope you read this. Not exactly an easy install to have to install in safe mode for it to work. I also use Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.

I had the exact same problem. This is right after a clean install of windows 64 and service pack 1.

Nothing else installed except malwarebytes first, then Avast so I would be surprised if the system was already infected.

I will try the install from safe mode and will report back if that does not work.

Yep. I have posted here with similar issue. Sounds like Avast really broke something.

Quite frankly I have given up with it.

If I read here that the issue has been resolved, I might try again. Until then they have lost a potential customer.

OK, Here is the latest.

I can Install but something is definitely wrong. I am rebuilding two computers one 32 bit and one 64 bit.

After installing the service packs, the first step is to install MBAM and Avast. BOTH CLEAN COMPUTERS will install but not start services.

After running the clean uninstall program from safe mode, the only way to get to INSTALL IS FROM SAFE MODE.

msconfig / BOOT / Select Safe Mode. (OR F8 if you are quick enough)

Hope they fix this soon!

avast! is not intended to be installed in Safe Mode.
Guidelines for an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. (Optional) If you want, save your avast! settings for later restoration (Settings > Maintenance > Back up).
  4. Uninstall avast! from Control Panel (if possible) and reboot.
  5. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1 in and follow the instructions. Reboot in Normal mode after that.
  6. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Register your free copy or add the license key for the paid versions. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.

Please, be patient, boot when it’s said to boot…

I was having the same issue with Avast! Service and Self Protection not starting. After following the instructions twice, it would still not work. Avast! uninstall through Programs and Features also would not work.

I’ve found the reason, though I’m not certain which one actually caused this.

I rebooted into safe mode again and used Aswclear to uninstall Avast! I rebooted and shut off both Windows defender and MalwareBytes file protection and unchecked start on boot. Rebooted again and installed Avast! successfully.

I suspect it’s MalwareBytes Pro version that was causing the conflict, but someone will have to confirm that.

Windows 7 64 bit.

I have win 7 64 with malwarebytes pro and have no issues. You shouldnt be running Windows Defender with Avast though anyway as they are both same level protection.

My apologies for starting a new thread today on exactly the same topic. With the same point being made by so many independent users you would think that the Avast people would come up with a patch that would eliminate the need to uninstall and reinstall (and re-register?) from safe mode.
