Seeing a lot of posts about IE not working/crashing I decided to check my IE 10 a couple of days ago. Yes it stopped working, however, I kept it going for long enough to disable the Avast Online Security add-on and haven’t had any problems with it since then. Just checked again (as it is my last choice for browsers) and it is fine.

My IE9 stopped working on both my PCs today. Did as you suggested and disbled the Avast internet security plug-in and it works fine. Must be a problem with the latest Avast update. I’m avoiding IE until Avast fix it as I don’t want to browse without protection.

Ditto… was working ok before today then both PCs today are takinig 2 minutes to load a page. Disabled it and now they run fine

Similar problem IE8 on xp pro. Takes about 2 minutes to open and same when click to go to another site.
Disable Avast internet security plug-in and it works fine.

Cheers

Same problem with the 2014 update and Internet explorer. have W7 ultimate (everything up to date) and getting a 50 second delay on each page load due to the Avast plug-in. Remove the plug-in no delay!
Obvious problem Avast , please fix it!

hi all,

Reported to Mods!

Thanks Bob

Hope someone is on duty and listening. It is Sunday today.

How did you disable the Avast internet security plug-in?
I’m’ running XP IE8 and And just installed and updated Avast 2014, then BAM…IE crawls or won’t work at all.
Thanks

These are sad days for Avast. I have been running and recommending their system for many years and have never had these kinds of problems. It was always the bloated competitors that had this stuff going on…

Once IE loads, (it may take a while) select the following:

Thanks a million…worked like a charm!!!
I can’t tell you how many systems I have out there for neighbors, friends, family, etc set on automatic program updates that are going to run straight into this issue. Most of them I have not yet had a chance to migrate to FireFox or Chrome either!! YIKES my phone is going to explode as Avast pushes out these updates!! Oh Lord…

Glad to help.

I’m having the same problem. Started in the last day or so and IE add-on has to be disabled to open ie. Firefox works fine.

Only use Internet Explorer on all my PC’s here, will disable web protection, til it’s fixed, and surf cautiously til then.

Only about 4 machines to fix up here

As I stated in my initial post
“All addons/accelerators etc disabled”; all includes avast’s plugins

Avast 2014 kills vanilla IE8 64bit; IE8 32bit works fine

Just a quick note, I’m getting calls from my friends today who are running avast. WebRep (Avast! online security) has broken the Internet Explorer. Disabling the AVAST addons fixes IE. Chrome installed on the same computer running the addon works fine. Seemed to have started late Sunday morning or early afternoon.

Also worth noting, on my i7-2xxx, if I wait for and don’t touch IE, it does eventually open. When I look at the toolbars section, it notes that the Avast addon took 57.06 seconds to open. Maybe this addon does a “phone home”, and something is wrong with Avast’s servers? Weird Chrome still works. Disabled for now within IE

Tim

I’ve had the same issues as well under Win7 pro. I just put a fresh install of avast 2014 as my avast 8 quit updating today. IE was taking forever to start up. I found on those avast add ons, I only needed to disable the 2 32-bit ones in IE. I left the 64 bits on and my IE 10 works fine now (using 64 bit windows). I’m on Firefox 24 and that wasn’t affected by Avast

I am running 64-bit. Like everyone else, my explore just stopped working today. I found this simple instruction video to reset Internet Explorer. It worked quick and easy and it wipes away the extensions that might be a problem.
