Bob3160,
OK…you have 4 more years of happiness than I do…congratulations.
Simple question…I HOPE…
Have a 32 bit older HP Win XP Pro that is a desktop connected to an ISP via DSL modem. Therefore it is sort of plain vanilla. This machine is used by the GK’s and I want to keep it fairly clean.
Have a multiple seat license for Trend Micro on a Dell that I bought and ran out of seats. Consumer Reports recommended Avast.
Have the paid $19.99 version, not the free or the $9.99.
Loaded it yesterday. The IE8 (which is the Highest Level of IE supported by Win XP Pro) is a little unstable on a couple of web sites and you have to refresh it sometimes.
However, it was really unstable when the Avast was installed. Disabled all the BHO Add-On’s in IE8 and figured out that Avast was the issue. Both sites went back to their normal, less than what I would like state…but they work.
I downgraded to IE 7. Then reinstalled IE 8. The problem still persisted. I then reset IE 8 to the default advanced settings. NO JOY. I am used the default security settings and have no custom or exception settings. The Compatiably settings or option do not resolve it.
SO. the Avast “IE 8 Add On” appears to be the issue. Tried the repair. No Joy. Removed Avast. Did a RegEdit cleaning for Avast. Got rid of most of it, but some parameters would not delete.
Then downloaded a fresh copy of Avast and used the license file and installed it.
NOTHING has changed. Have NOT played with the auto detection yet.
SO…since you seem to the Guru about this, I am trying to understand what is going on.

With the IE8 Add On disabled, WHAT specifically do you “Lose”. Remember that my pre-teen GK’s use the machine and they click on everything. The Trend Micro Titanium Worked great and the machine has not been attacked or unresponsive. However, CR says that Trend is not that good and I will probably change once the license runs out to one of their higher rated products.

I WILL play with the Auto Detection setting, but I think that is futile…YOUR comments?

Folks have commented on problems with the Beta. A little hesitant to go that far.
This machine is only used a few hours per week…and mostly for their Study Sites…but my GS does do a LOT of googling for games…
Thanks…
