Avast 2015 blocking Turbo Boost function in Intel i5 processor

This is a bug report. Avast 2015 or one of the virus definitions is blocking Turbo Boost function in 4 computers I tested. Removal of Avast 2015 restored Turbo Boost functionality. I hope this gets fixed soon as Avast is my preferred anti-virus.

More details would probably be appreciated. Screenshots etc.

I’ve already removed Avast in 4 computers with i5 processors that would not Turbo Boost so I can’t provide a screen since they are working properly now. 2 of the laptops I’m getting ready for selling. A Toshiba P875 w/ Win7 had the Intel Turbo Boost monitor installed and it would not fluctuate with the Passmark CPU stress test running. Bios settings were checked, new chipset driver installed, power options checked, nothing helped. So I made the decision to reformat the laptop and then recheck the Turbo Boost at every stage of updating and utility installation. After reformatting I installed a 3rd party CPU monitor software (Argus) and the Passmark CPU stress tester. The computer then showed Turbo Boosting while running the stress test. I then removed Norton Trial AV and installed Avast Free and reran the CPU stress test. The result was the Turbo Boost function failed and CPU only ran at base GHZ. I then removed Avast free and reran the CPU stress test while monitoring with Argus. The result was the Turbo Boost function worked. So I reinstalled the Intel Turbo Boost Monitor 2.6 and it indicated Turbo Boost was working as well during a Passmark CPU stress test. I installed an alternative anti-virus and Turbo Boost function continued working. 3 other laptops with Intel i5 processors had the same problem and were corrected by removal of Avast and installing an alternative AV. Surprisingly my wife’s Sony which also has an i5 processor did not have a similar problem while running Avast 2015, 4 out of 5 laptops had the problem. Hope this information helps.

How did you remove the trial version of the AV that came with the system ?

Also, take a look at the following:

How did you remove the trial version of the AV that came with the system ?

With Windows uninstaller feature.

Windows uninstaller feature initiated the Trial AV uninstaller program.

That unfortunately only removed a part of the program. It could very well be the leftovers or the other AV that caused your problems.
In my signature you’ll find a link on how to Successfully install Avast. That will also lead you to the removal tools for Avast and the other AV vendors products.

The link you provided is a thread from 2013. Respectfully suggesting more current information in regard to Avast 2015 version and Intel Turbo Boost compatibility problems would be more helpful. I will wait for a new version and try Avast again.

I’ve also alerted Avast to this thread. Hopefully a rep will have some comments to make.
That still doesn’t rule out a possible 3rd party AV conflict since the AV that came with your computer
wasn’t properly removed with the manufacturers removal tool.

I will try running a clean uninstall of the trial AV and reinstall Avast free. If the clean uninstall program does not detect Norton trial I will try finding remnants with Revo uninstaller.

You’ll find your Norton AV removal tool at:

I ran the Norton removal tool and reinstalled Avast free. The Turbo Boost feature worked only before rebooting then it stopped working.

I just now also ran the AVG removal tool too as AVG was my substitute AV after Turbo Boost was found not working with Avast 2015, didn’t help. Will now remove Avast 2015 and reinstall AVG to get Intel Turbo Boost to work again. I prefer Avast and will reinstall later when a version comes out that fixes this problem of Intel Turbo Boost incompatibility.
