Updated: 2 Windows 7 64bit Home Premium and 2 Windows 8.1 Pro last weekend. All 4 computers will not restore to any previously created “System Restore” point. Has anyone else experienced this “free” update problem?
Yeah… I had this problem too. I had to drop into Windows 8.1 Repair Mode and use System Restore there to have System Restore work for me.
Something about Avast protecting its antivirus definition files prevented the system restore from being successful.
Other experts can post but I think you have to turn off Avast’s Self Protection mode before you do a System Restore.
Nothing at all wrong with doing it that way. Many experts feel running System Restore from the WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) it’s the best way, actually, and the most likely to succeed - and not having to do specifically with Avast.

Restore from Clean Boot (Safe Mode)
+1 I have experienced Avast preventing successful System Restores. The error code generated is usually 0xC00000022.
The suggestion provided to use Safe Mode or WinRE might help. Given that over 99.99% of Avast users don’t read this forum (over 200 million users; most threads having view numbers in the low hundreds), a fix by Avast will probably be appreciated by many people. You may wish to contact Avast support and report the issue and ask for them to implement a fix.
