Avast 2015 free edition - prior scan schedule eliminated - why?

I can’t provide specific version information here because I am on a different computer from the one protected by Avast free, but I think readers here will be able to determine what I’m talking about.

I update my Avast free antivirus software in a fairly timely manner when prompted to do so.

This week, the latest update request was “pushed” to me, I updated, restarted, and away I went.

But then this morning, I noticed two things I didn’t like. One was that my scheduled overnight scan did not happen. The other was that scheduling scans became much more difficult.

Regarding the running of a scan, I’ve been using Avast free for roughly 10 years, and through each version change, my settings, including the scan schedules, have always been preserved. The schedule has been a “quick scan” (I think that’s the terminology) for Wednesday through Monday mornings at 12:15 AM, and a “full system scan” (again, not sure of the terminology) that runs Tuesday morning at 12:15 AM. If these scans run while I’m on the computer, the “quick” one takes about 15 minutes and the “full” one takes about an hour, if that’s any help.

Today I noticed an empty scan log. No scan had run. So my scan schedule, that I’ve not tinkered with in the four years I’ve had my current computer, had been eliminated as part of the software update (and again, I’m reasonably IT savvy, and have updated Avast and a lot of programs many times over the years, so I know what I’m doing).

In trying to reschedule the scans, I could not find a way to define different scans (“quick” and “full system” as has been the case for years).

So with the above as background, my questions are:

[ol]- Where did my scan schedule go?

  • Why was it eliminated, when many prior Avast updates have retained it?
  • How do I define and schedule different “quick” and “full” scans, like I had before?[/ol]

It seems that the recent update has corrupted your install. It has happened to a few users and a clean install fixes the issue.

You need to perform a clean install:

Note: It’s important you used the stub online installer from the one I linked… NOT the offline one.

Note: You need to be ONLINE during this install (online installer works in all cases whereas offline sometimes doesn’t)

1.Download your version of avast! and the avastclear tool:

Avast Free Antivirus
Avast Pro Antivirus
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier

Download Avast Clear Tool

  1. Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #3]
  2. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear. [Running Avastclear is normal mode will give a prompt to go into Safe Mode]
Check : Once uninstalled check in device manager>view>show hidden devices if there is anything related to avast with a yellow triangle… if so, uninstall it and reboot.
  3. Install the version you downloaded.
  4. Reboot.

Free: If you have the Free version, register the product for free for a year from the avast! UI.
Paid: If you have a paid license, insert the license key/activation code after the reboot at stage 6.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. It’s better to ask than make a mistake and start over again with the process.

Not a big deal, but I assume that by doing this “clean install,” I will eradicate any presence of configuration and scheduling files, right?

Does a correctly-working version of the current Avast allow “quick” and “full system” scans (separate types), and scheduling the different scans?

It will eradicate your configurations and schedules yes but you can can back up your config by Avast UI > Settings > General [scroll down to bottom] > Backup settings.

I don’t quite understand your second question.

There will be the default quick, full, removable media and boot time scan which are default.

You can schedule full and quick scans at different times.

Alikhan, you totally nailed it. Thanks.

It was probably something like 15-30 minutes to complete this, including the reboots, entering safe mode, all that, but everything looked and worked (and manually configured) easily and as expected, and I’m up and running again.

Thanks again, so much.

You’re welcome.

I had the same problem, performed a clean install as per the directions.

I think I figured out how to schedule a full-system scan (the option wasn’t there before so it must have been a corrupted install). But I can’t find a way to specify “which” hard drives I want it scan on a daily full system scan.

How long should a smart scan take (on average)? When I tried it before the new install, it was still running after 9 hours and said it had 40% left to scan.

avast UI > Scan > Scan for viruses > [choose scan from dropdown] > Settings > Scheduling

Or in pictures

Or you can also use the drop down tabs on the 4 main boxes shown in the UI to change smart scan to full or quick scan.
