Please don’t be surprised when you see this version knocking on your door. It’s basically just v.418 with a couple of important tiny bits that will let us smoothly update your systems to version 4.5. These bits are totally invisible (from the user’s perspective) but it is still very recommended to update to this version (unless you’re already using the 4.5 beta).
Cool, When the Avast has a new verison of the net or similar message I thought 4.5 was released I got too excited then I found out it was just a update for 4.1 which is still cool but not as cool when 4.5 is out ;D
Will this version automatically install or should I download and install it manually? If manually, should I uninstall 4.1.418 before installing or install over top?
Normally the usigetskin error is caused by the Database reader coding in the ini file.
Open DataBase Connectivity - (ODBC) A standard for accessing different database systems. There are interfaces for Visual Basic, Visual C++, SQL and the ODBC driver pack which contains drivers for various databases.
An application can submit statements to ODBC using the ODBC flavor of SQL. ODBC then translates these to whatever flavor the database understands.
It is basically how the computer “talks” to the programs it uses.
Sometimes, ODBC is not appropriate for certain “readings”, thus a change to XML does the trick.
XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a W3C code.
The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is a consortium that produces standards—“recommendations”, as they call them—for the World Wide Web.
XML is a markup language…a kind of text encoding that represents text as well as details about the structure and appearance of the text. Its primary purpose is to facilitate the sharing of structured text and information allowing programs to modify and validate documents in these languages without prior knowledge of their form.
It is a more “general” decoding language and thus at times more appropriate for use than ODBC.
Find the Avast.ini file in the Avast folder/Data.
Look down the lines for [Common] heading.
Under this, find Database and change ODBC to XML.
This should take care of the error.
If you do not have the COMMON heading, just look for the Database line.
I thought this would fix my problems on my friend’s machine, but I can see no Avast.ini file at all, Even after a search!
I have looked at the various threads here, and even tried running C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE ACTSKIN4.OCX but this didn’t work either.
This usigetskin error is driving me nuts !
Originally the machine had Nortons 5 installed which I’ve removed; even downloaded one of their executable files to remove all registry entries.
After this I tried uninstalling Avast several times, but each time I’d get the same error. So I uninstalled once again, downloaded a small executable from Avast to remove all trace of it, and started again.
Once agin the same error occured.
What the hell am I doing wrong???
This machine is a new HP computer, with XP Home installed, and SP2 which I installed this arvo.
Now I changed the db type from ODBC to XML and vice versa, both fired the same error (above) :‘( :’( :‘( I can’t run on-demand scanner anymore
even updating to ver.4.5 from ver 4.1.501 did not fix it : : ,
Ver. 4.5 fired the same error ??? ???
what is going on? : : ??? :’( :o
It’s very unlikely to be the reason… but could the problem be actually with the skins? I mean, what skin were you using before? Didn’t you delete some?
