Prompted by a few on these boards, I upgraded to Avast 4.5 this morning. I use Eudora email. Used to be I’d input my passwords when opening Eudora and I’d get my mail and as long as Eudora was not closed it would continue to check for mail at the interval set and retrieve mail. I did not have to re-input my password unless I closed Eudora and re-opened it.
Well, since upgrading to 4.5 I’m constantly being asked for one or another password even though I have not closed Eudora. It seems to jump from one email address to another randomly asking for a password for the various email addresses.
Also, with the previous version when I set the smtp server info, Avast input different coding in my smtp fields which included a # sign (don’t remember what else it put in there). This is now gone and has been replaced with what used to be there, example: smtp.ispname.com. I’m concerned that it’s not scanning mail. I’m glad I haven’t had any alerts pop up as that is nice, however since I was receiving quite a few yesterday and none today I wonder if something may be wrong. I cannot find the place to reset the smtp info like I did in the previous version I was using. I found one place where I could input smtp.ispname.com and an email address and password - however I have more than one email address and password so how would I input more than one?
Please tell me if Avast 4.5 is supposed to change the pop/smtp servers in the email program or not. I have installed this also on my laptop and the issue I outlined in my initial post does not seem to be happening on the laptop but the install of 4.5 on both machines does not include the “funky” stuff in the pop/smtp settings. I’m thinking either this has changed in 4.5 or the install of 4.5 over the previous version does not work properly maybe, as it voids out those settings?
It’s automatic over Windows 2k/XP. Not with 9x/Me.
I don’t use Eudora. But it’s not supposed to use 127.0.0.1 etc. with any other email client anymore.
The configuration in some email clients, specially if you used different configuration due to spam killers, does not come back to the original values correctly. You have to do it manually and set the email client like you will if avast! does not exist.
Running XP and the email settings are the same as before Avast, so that should be correct according to information just given. Ok, that makes me feel better.
I will go mess with the desktop computer now since the original problem of this post has not cropped up on my laptop.
I still seem to have a problem here but I do believe I’ve isolated it. I don’t have any problem with one server any more but I retrieve mail from two different servers. I have most of my email addys on one server and that is working fine - no more errors. I believe that is because I have selected that server where one sets that up. But when I go for mail on the other server I keep getting error msgs more often than not and it then of course will not download my mail. Occasionally, I can poll and get the mail but these instances are few and far between.
Is there a way to set Avast so that it can poll more than one server which I believe will cure this issue?
Deb, definetivelly this is not avast trouble. Avast works with as many servers as you want. I use four differents servers. The problem remains on authentication. Some servers need user@server and others just user, for instance.
The server you select while using setup is the default one, used to send files to Alwil for tests, and other things. It’s explained in FAQ on my signature.
I recommend more tests with the email account settings 8)
