avast 4.5 home email problem

I’ve noticed that since I’ve downloaded and installed the free version of avast 4.5 home where it saysin avast! on-access scanner ‘last scanned’ and ’ last invected’ are blank. Am I to assume that its not scanning any of my emails sent or recieved? I’m using outlook express 6. I have asked it to insert the notes in all emails but I never see anything in the emails. Please help. Thanks jf

I assume you’re then using Windows 98/Me.
If it’s true, then you need to use Internet Mail Wizard.
You can find it in Start menu under avast! Antivirus.

Are you using the Internet Mail provider?
If so is it enabled/started?
What OS are you using?

You can also check the headers of your incoming email should have something like this in it.

X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0503-2, 21/01/2005), Inbound message X-Antivirus-Status: Clean

no in fact im running windows xp home sp2

and i dont see any avast headers in any email messages
installed are internet mail = normal , network shield = normal, p2p shield = normal, standard shield = normal.

im also running norton internet security pro 2004 and give avast full access.

When you look at the Internet Mail provider, the Start button will be greyed out if it is active (it should be running in the Task manager - ashMaiSv.exe).

If so then something would appear to be stopping it scanning and the suspect would be your firewall/Norton internet security. The file that should be allowed access is ashMaiSv.exe, check and ensure it has permission.

okay the only running in norton firewall with ‘permit all’ access is ashServ.exe, avast.setup
but the internet mail in avast! on-access is grayed out and says currently running

ashMaiSv.exe also needs access in norton firewall.

now that has access and still not working

should sensativity be set to normal?

If you boot, will it help?
Or, shortly, stop and start again the Internet Mail Provider…

No, I think the two things are not related each other…

no nothing is making this thing scan my emails and it says nothing in last scanned. i’ll asume since i installed this that i’m not protected.

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?
Which firewall do you use?
Did you try to repair avast installation (Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast antivirus > Change/Remove button > choose the ‘Repair’ option at the bottom of the left column).

Do you have any spyware resident? (TeaTimer, PrevX, Ad-watch…)

i tried it all
i run norton internet security pro 2004
no other shit in the background is running that i know of at least.
i repaired and re-installed avast for the last time.
norton has full access to run all avast.
something is not working here
do you feel me now?

You might try removing all traces of Norton, then removing avast! and a re-install of avast! only.

Try a search here for instructions to remove Norton completely

why would i want to remove norton? i never installed norton antivirus just the firewall is installed. i’m not removing the firewall. wouldn’t this be an issue for others running norton? how come no advise from avast?
