Hi all,
I have just downloaded Avast 4.5 home addition, and installed. I found out that the SMTP and POP3 server addresses in my Outlook Express haven’t been changed, and that Outlook Express access emails directly, not through Avast, i.e. no email scan.
I tried to do as told in the FAQ, i.e. ‘waking up’ email scanning with the Mail Protection Wizard, only to find that there is no such thing… I tried start->programs->Avast antivirus->, and could only find 3 items there: Avast antivirus, Avast web site, and Help.
I un-installed, downloaded again the package, re-installed, and the same results.
Any idea?

ronensh,
First of all, welcome to the forum.
You say you don’t have a “Mail Protection Wizard”. If you are using
Windows 2000 or Xp this is normal! In these OS’s, the mail protection is
configured automatically.
What makes you think you don’t have e-mail protection?
Do you see the mail scanning icon everytime you download new mail (next to the clock in the down-right corner of your screen?)
Also, right click the “a” ball and select “On access protection control”. Is the e-mail scanner enabled? Are the settings correct?
Welcome
To see if avast! is scanning emails, check one of these points:
-
Is the avast icon (the special one of email scanning) be shown in the system tray?
-
Is your email header with the lines X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2004), Inbound message and X-Antivirus-Status: Clean? (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details)
-
Are clean notes added at the bottom of the email? (Internet Mail provider settings)

Hello again, thanks for your replies.
The reason why I thought Avast doesn’t scan my mails was the fact that in Outlook Express account properties, I noticed that the addresses of SMTP and POP3 servers haven’t been changed (to 127.0.0.1 or something). I understood that Avast should have ‘stolen’ the original addresses and put something else instead. Was I wrong?
Anyway, now when mails are read or sent, I do notice that the ‘a’ rotates, and a special icon appears next to the clock. I guess it’s ok…
I will be completely calmed down when the next virus is received AND detected…

It sure looks like everything is working ok. But if you wish to do so, you can test it yourself with the eicar test file.
In Windows 2k\Xp, the version 4.5 has a new mail detection that will work automatically. You only have to set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages.
The localhost (127.0.0.1) is only for Windows 98\Me

Yes, it’s working.
Again, thank you all for your comments and clarifications.
