avast! 4.5 - Win98SE - mail scanner

Hello crowd !

I just upgraded my father’s PC from avast! 4.1 to 4.5 (beta), and I did it remotely… oh God, I adore pcAnywhere… this technology makes me so thrilled… relation Canada - Croatia, and everything was done in just few minutes… wonderful. Now, back to subject.

I don’t have a clue how everything should work on Windows 98, so I’ll ask here. Everything seems to work great, no problems at all. I just have one question. When I looked at his Outlook Express account settings, I’ve noticed that those 127.0.0.1 instead of “real” server names are still there. Is that normal behaviour for version 4.5 considering that we’re talking about Windows 98 ? I know that on my system (windows XP Pro SP2) as soon as I upgraded to avast! 4.5, all my server names were back on it’s place under account settings in OE…

Can someone tell me, do I have to do something manualy on my father’s system, or should I just leave it like it is ?

Also, I’ve noticed that his MAIL PROTECTION WIZARD is still listed under Start/Programs. I’ve lost mine as soon as I upgraded to 4.5, I mean there is realy no need to have it as everything regarding mail protection is done automaticaly, but I’m little confused about that behaviour on Windows 98.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance !

The new detection method for emails is only possible under Windows NT plataforms (i.e., Windows 2k/XP). For earlier versions, it’s necessary to use the localhost (127.0.0.1).

Leave it as it was at 4.1 version.

MPW is necessary and run under Windows 98.

Well, that clears it all. Great, thanks Technical ! At least, now I know that everything is like it should be…

Thanks again pal !

Cheers !

Edit: Next week one good friend of mine is going to upgrade my father’s PC to Windows XP, since I am unable to do that from here. Then, everything regarding mail protection will be automatic.

After he/you re-install avast after upgrading to XP, different OS requires re-install. ;D

I will suggest uninstall in actual OS and only after installing the new OS run avast setup again

Thanks guys for your concern, I know that avast! should be installed after upgrading to new OS, but I advised my friend to do it differently… he will completely format C: (NTSC) partition and add partition D:

Anyway, there is nothing on his system that needs to be kept. He just have some family photos and some movies I recorded with my S-VHS camera, but everything is backed up on CDs. I advised him to perform clean install from the scratch, and of course it requires avast! to be installed from the scratch.

Thanks again !

Cheers !
