Avast 4.5

Hi, Avast updated to version 4.5 on my XP box (without SP1 or SP2). I had problems with the service packs, so I re-built my machine and am going SPless.

When version 4.5 installed, I rebooted and got a BSOD. In short I could not boot into my machine.

The only thing I could think of is the fact that when I re-built my manchine, and finally installed Avast; I was informed by Avast installation that another virus scanner was present.

Another virus scanner is NOT installed, although Norton SystemWorks IS installed, without the AntiVirus portion. Also FixIt Utilities is installed, but NOT the virus portion.

Does anyone have a reason for the BSOD and Avast 4.5?

Thanks

Al

(a) Have you installed SystemWorks without NAV
or
(b) did you install the whole package and then un-installed NAV?

If your answer is (b), even though you have uninstalled it, it leaves a lot of registry strings behind which you have to remove with symantec’s special utillity, which you can download here: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/misc/consumer/Rnav2003.exe

Thanks for your reply. I installed Norton SystemWorks WITHOUT the Antivirus portion, so a), but thanks for the info I will try it.

Do you have Symantec GoBack installed? Maybe it’s not an avast BSOD but a GoBack one…
Spyros is fully right about trash left behind by NAV… :frowning: >:(

Just downloaded the program and am pleased with it so far. Was looking for a better alternative to Norton. However I was reading on a CNET forum that AVAST 4.5 may not be a ‘free’ program, just ‘free’ registration. One poster said that use of the program is only good for 60 days or perhaps registration must reoccur every so many months (1 year?).

Thought I’d go to the horses mouth.

  1. Free without additional registration process?
  2. Free but with additional regitration requirements?
  3. Free’ for 60 days, then must purchase?
  4. Other?

Yikes! Any/all help/clarification would be appreciated. ???

avast Home version is free for HOME and NON-COMMERCIAL usage.
It requires free registration each 14 months.

When you download you can install the Trial version (for 60 days) and, after that, you must register to use Home or buy it.

What’s wrong?

Welcome to avast forums.

Whats wrong?

Nothing - just some questions

atacco, send me a couple of your latest *.dmp files (from \Windows\Minidump) file on my email - I’ll try to find out where was the problem (or conflict). Thanks.

Thank you one and all, I seem to have fixed it. I used the Symantec utility Rnav2003.exe, then I updated Avast to 4.5 and all is good.
