Avast 4.6 hangs surfing web

I have had several incidents of avast hangin while web surfing using firefox. I will simply be surfing along and firefox will stop loading pages. If I stop all the avast services it will start working fine again. Here is some system detail.

Win2k all service packs applied
Jetico personal firewall with all avast services and exe added as system level app aloowing full access
Firefox 1.5
Treewalk DNS

Any thoughts or suggestions?

There are some who are experiencing these problem with firefox 1.5 that aren’t using avast. There is even a post on these forums which mentions this issue of firefox hanging/pausing whist loading web pages and also gives a link to a more detailed report.

So I rather think that this may be a firefox 1.5 issue as reported in some newsletters and mention in the above link. I use firefox 1.5 but haven’t experienced this problem. However I recently did a complete uninstall including deleting the profile folder and program folder and started with a clean install with firefox 1.5, don’t know if this may resolve your problem.

If you disable WebShield, will Firefox work?
If you remove avast services and exe from Jetico personal firewall settings and let them ask for permition again, would you be able to browse again?

I guess I should have been clearer it will happen also with Internet Explorer and NetCaptor (IE based browser). When it happens all I do is right click the avast icon, choose “Stop on-access protection”, hit yes on the dialog and then the pages start loading again without even closing and reopening the browser. Until I installed avast I hadnt had this isssue with firefox 1.5.

I will give this a shot and see how it works.

I just installed avasta 4 home edition and experience the same. Running winxp sp2 current updates, firefox 1.5 - ZAPro 6 firewall-- all was fine until I intalled avasta than I could not get to the web with any browser. I didn’t have Luck when I stopped the protections - had to uninstall. which allowed me to get here to ask and found this post.

Question does it have anything to do with the ‘warning’ at install about transparent proxy? I thought I read that was win9x, winxp wasn’t listed.?
Any suggestion are appreciated… My Norton expired and wanted to try Avasta…

I will now reinstall and test - I will report back if all works and explain what I did.

The magic words ‘ZAPro 6 firewall’ what are the Provacy control settings (High can cause similar issues), this could previously have an effect which I believe was supposed to be fixed in the latest version of ZA. Does it allow ashWebSv.exe (avast Web Shield) internet access?

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast comptability dialog box the transparent mode proxy in webshield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video

Thanks David
I found that out last night but didn’t have time to repost here -
Glad to see I was right.

No problem, I trust everything is working now?
Welcome to the forums.

With the last update (Avast 4.6.744 vps 0552-1) I’m having a horrible time both on IE and FF.

Yes, I use ZAPro, privacy is not set to high. Note that I am not that computer savvy, ok?

Pages are hanging like crazy or they won’t load at all - I just get a blank white page. It’s worse than dial-up and I’m on cable now!

When I rclick on the little blue a ball, I see Internet mail, IM, network, Outlook, P2P, Standard. There’s nothing that says Webshield.

I went into my control panel to see if that would “fix” things as advised in another thread, and in there there is a proxy settings? That is set to direct connection.

There’s definitely something wrong, I’m not sure what. I don’t really want to have to go setting up proxies for my browsers as I don’t know what that would do on certain sites. I know that sites that use java can “see” through proxies, and I play on a game site that uses java. Anyone trying to use a proxy there is banned - permanently.

So, what is the deal with this webshield, why do we need to go in and change our proxy settings? Oh, and I was looking at another tutorial about something else that should be in my taskbar - the “i” - it’s not there.

Help this older, non-techie, confused and very frustrated person? Thanks

How about scrolling that mouse wheel?

Ah, done that. Nothing in the little “menu”, though it does say webshield in the control panel. It just doesn’t seem to exist when I go look for it.

I may unfortunately have to go looking for something else if this keeps up. I was able to get here, but my home page will not completely load anymore. Just the outline and huge blank white space.

I’ve checked my ZAPro - avast is in my sites list; in Programs: avast! antivirus serv, avast! e-mail scan, avast service GUI, and …

avast!Antivirus Update and avast Web Scanner - if I click on those 2, then properties, I get a Cannot Find c:\Program FilesAlwil Software\Avast4\avast.setup or … Avast4\asjWebSv.exe

in my programs components list: Aavm4h.dll, AavmRpch.dll, AhResMai.dll, AHRESWS.DLL, ashBase.dll, ashShell.dll, ashUlnt.dll, ASHWSFTR.DLL, aswAux.dll, aswCmnB.dll, aswCmnOS.dll, aswCmnS.dll, aswEngin.dll (x2), aswScan.dll (x2), Lang.dll, LangMai.dll, XT1922.dll

That’s all I can find with avast or alwil in the path. So, what now?

Time to go for a repair I think, go to control panel (Windows) select add/remove programmes - select avast - select change/remove - you will then get the uninstall come up with on the left hand side change/uninstal/update - scroll down and you will see repair, select this. You must be online. With ZA I would suggest you turn off the privacy feature as it doesn’t do a great deal

You won’t find avast.setup ‘c:\Program FilesAlwil Software\Avast4\avast.setup’ as this file is only created prior to update and removed afterwards.
When it is in place it is in this location C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\avast.setup
