When I go for a ‘Thorough Scan’ of my local drives, the scanning hangs up after about 4000 files have been scanned. Looking at the 'Task manager, the CPU is then running at 100%.
Any ideas???

also, it is always useful to post some more info… like system configuration (basic stuff), security related programs you have installed on your system (besides avast!).
Btw, what is your avast! version ? Your OS ? etc…
