I am suddenly getting onscreen message popup which is headed ‘Avast Connection Timeout - internet connection elapsed’ and have to make continue or not choice. Not seen this before and would appreciate knowing why this is happening now.

The reason we ask questions is to be able to determine exactly why a timeout occurs, some malware can cause timeouts as can some p2p programs that have been incorrectly set-up to use email ports to communicate.
Simply extending a timeout duration (which I believe is what you have done) doesn’t identify why it happened in the first place, treat the cause and not the symptom.
