Avast 4.7 Home Edition and Win98 Problem.

Hello to all:

I am a newbie but do have IT experiance, I currently have a PC Athlon2600+ with 512mb Ram, NV5200 128mb Vid Card, 40gb WD HDD, Logitech wireless KB+Mouse, 17"LCD Monitor running Windows 98 with office 2000 and a Canon Pixma110 3 in one.

The main problem that I have is that after doing a system scan with Avast the Icons from Quick Launch, Task Bar and the System Tray disappear. This only started about 26th April 2006 and I have tried everything except a windows reinstall to solve the problem.

The Icons return after a reboot but I was wondering if anyone has had this kind of problem before.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Ash

Hello,
I had the same problem. If you are not familiar with the registry be careful as it can be ruined. But this is a Registry “hack” and you CANNOT use TweakUI or any other program to correct this.

  1. regain your hidden “shelliconcache” file in the Windows directory.
  2. make a copy and hide it from the system for saftey.
  3. delete it so the system sees the delete.
  4. go to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Advanced\IconCache
There you will find a string value for Max Cached Icons
Change it to either 4096 or 8192
  5. Do a complete system shutdown and restart ( not just a reboot)
  6. Now check the size of the hidden “shelliconcache” file
It should be larger than it ever was before and should solve the problem… it did for me.

P.S. I’m just an old fart that used to program back in the days of DOS beginning with 2.0 and yes I am a bit crazy but like to think Not Dumb! Ha!Ha! – Hope this helps.
