Avast 4.7 increasingly resource-hungry since last few updates?

Hi,
Long time since posted, Avast user since Avast32 days.
Is it just an impression or is Avast 4.7 slightly more resources hungry since last few updates (some weeks-months or so)?

  • Updating is working but also slower then ever.
  • Services do take more resources, and also already saw issue reported of Ashserv.exe going to 100percent cpu usage for minute or so.

Sure hope 4.8 would go back to normal again?

Fyi using Avst Home combined with Comodo Firewall 3. (Also combo with Jetico 1 has exactly same issues)

Bgrds and keep up the remarkable work (and please do not cripple future Home editions),

I’m not seeing a problem with CPU and resources at Vista…
Any other security program that could be interfering?
What are you doing when ashserv.exe takes CPU?
If you check into the Standard Shield panel, which file is being scanned?

I previously haven’t noticed any difference in 4.7 or any increase in resources prior to my updating to the 4.8,1147 beta. The amount of resources is also dependent on what you are doing.

Seems fairly normal on my XP computer. Click picture below to enlarge.

Hi,

  • no other security programs other then Avast and Comodo firewall (not even installed for on-demand)
  • did not think of checking which file was being scanned at time of 100percent usage. Must say am not sure if i actually would be able to, at those times, as all is frozen then actually. Will try to, at next 100percent moment and advise…
  • well, the 100percent moments are a real pain; but in another way the increased general usage, as well as time-taking updates, are a pain. On my low end machine with so few real time programs running at same time, i quickly get aware of any increases.

What i did not mention before is that over last weeks i re-installed Windows twice, and also Avast 4.7.1098, and then updated virus defs. In both cases complete Avast defs update was some 9.5Mb as per my firewall, which does seem quite a lot to me…

Brgds,

I’m not following you… can you explain?

How much RAM do you have?

Like others here I am not seeing the issues you report even on my 8 year old Dell (1Ghz cpu 512Mb) system.

Under normal running conditions you would typically be loading on the very small incremental update to the VPS file even though those updates can be very resource intensive.

Hi,
-the (not even non-resident) refers to the earlier part of the sentence, being the non existence of any other security progs, not to the last part of the sentence ‘Comodo firewall’

  • 1.3Ghz P4 with 128Mb RAM. Don’t laugh. Can’t find the type (RIMM) any more, and cant upgrade to more then 256Mb anyway…
  • thanks, have read the post you’re referring to. Quite sure its ashserv.exe and not avast.setup though… I am aware that also update takes long (as i mentioned in my original post)

so might it be the 128 really is too low? I think min requirements for Avast are stated as 64Mb still no?

thanks all replies, but dont want to take up too much of your time. Im already (still) happy about Avast being still free and 4.8 upcoming…

Have you tried your friend google, http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=RIMM+memory, lots of hits, you could refine the search more to see if you can find any in Belgium. Some of those listed might send to Belgium.

I’m sure some of the specialist memory people like Crucial may be able to supply.
