avast 4.7 on windows me not being able to scan some things

when i run avast anti-virus 4.7 at the end a box comes up with things that it was not able to scan. i try to scan them and/or delete them manually and it wont let me do it. do you know what these items may be and/or how to get rid of them. i am having windows errors and think that they may be due to these things that are not able to be scanned or deleted. i am not familiar with the avast anti-virus program at all. it came with the refurbished compaq computer that i just bought. the computer store says that they will not give me any technical help what so ever.

Hi lostone!
Could you be so kind & explain more specifically what exactly filesAvast said it can’t scan i.e. where are these files situated on your system?
P.S. Wellcome to Avast forums! 8)

avast! would have also given the reason why these files can’t be scanned, can you give a few examples of the files that can’t be scanned and their location ?

Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn’t know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).

When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can’t be scanned.

By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.

I doubt these files that can't be scanned are related, but since you don't say what these windows errors are (?) there is no way we can say.

Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.

the files that cant be scanned are:c:/windows/temporary internet files/kona liblnline and others that say they are in drive g,which i don’t think i have.it just says unable to scan g. the error message is :an error has occurred during the processing of the result. however the scan does come up as not having any viruses. am i supposed to do anything about these files? i am thinking about reinstalling windows me with my backup disc because i already tried to use the restore option which didnt work. my computer keeps freezing up on me and shows windows oe errors. i can run an auto install but i dont know if i will lose any of the programs that i have on computer such as avast, internet explorer, outlook express ect… im also not sure if i would have to do any reconfiguring either. that is beyond my knowledge. if u can help with the reinstall topic i would greatly apreciate it because from ur input i do not belive that i have a virus that is causing my problems…need help bad. please give any that you can…thx very much

The temporary internet files may be in use if you still have your browser open during the scan, I would advise that before you run a scan you clear/delete the temporary internet files, since these are temporary files the is little point having them scanned, delete them and close your browser before the scan.

Since you have a Compaq computer, I suspect that this is a hidden recovery partition. If this is correct then you could exclude the g: drive from scans (Program Settings, Exclusions).

The last paragraph of my post if there is a legitimate reason for the files not being scaned then no you don’t have to do anything.

This isn't detailed enough to be of help, you need to say what you were doing when you got the freeze and give the full error or post a screenshot of any error message.
i can run an auto install but i dont know if i will lose any of the programs that i have on computer such as avast, internet explorer, outlook express ect..
Sorry I don't know what you mean by auto install, auto install what ?

when referring to “i can run an auto install” i was talking about reinstalling windows me. i was told by the computer shop that to insert disk and click on auto install. will i lose all the programs that are on the computer? will i have to reconfigure anything manually?please help thank you

when i said that my computer would freeze up …it does that when i am browsing and when in a game site. it gives no error message…it just freezes up and i have to reboot by manually shutting down the computer by pushing the on/off button. any help u can give i would apreciate…it is an intermitent problem

Sorry I have never had winME but with other versions of windows (winXP) they usually detect the presence of the current operating system and offer a Repair install, this ‘should’ only replace the winME files and not touch any data files or other programs, the key word here is ‘should’ as I have no experience of winME.

A google search returns many hits http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=repair+install+windows+ME, this is just one, http://www.windowsreinstall.com/indexwinme.htm.

Freezes:
WinME and previous versions suffer from a reduction in resources to the point that things slow down and lock-up (freeze) requiring a reboot. Ensure that you only run essential applications, anti-virus, firewall, etc. the others when you are done with them close them.

Monitor your system resources and as you see them reduce to 30% or so you are in that area where you could suffer slowdowns and or freezes if it gets much below that figure, close non essential applications.

No, you shouldn’t lose anything.

Yes. All Windows updates and other Microsoft programs (maybe Media Player, for instance).

Most probabaly, due to the instability of Windows Me. Indeed, a very poor MS operational system… :-\

unfortunately am only able to run windows me on my old computer. i am now having sound issues…i went into my sounds and media and everything is configured as it should be but i only get the windows sounds and music but do not get any of the sounds when playing simple games on the computer…if anyone knows anything about sounds on computers please advise me on what to do next…my speakers are new and do work and my device is listed and is in default modes. i didnt have any problems with the sounds until i restored windows me.any help???
