I now have 4.8.1195 on everything from 95 to XP without any probs. If you still have a download of 4.7 that you can revert to then I would have no fear.
i am currently using 4.7 version on xp sp2 … & my machine is kinda 2 old, a p4 …
so heavy duty softies dont work on my machine … 4.7 is just working great 4 me bt have a slight thinking of getting the LATEST softy …
Has all the glitches affecting Avast been fixed? Can I safely install Avast though updates or wait for the next release.
You will never know unless you try it.
Whilst there have been some that have experienced problems and you only see those on the forums (after all that is what it is for), but you don’t see those who don’t experience any problems and they are a huge majority.
There is also a later version 4.8.1201 due to be released soon, which has further tweaks for some of the minor hiccups. So I don’t think you should have any problems and you know wher we are if you do.
I try the Avast 4.8 and reply IF there are any problems
It’s working fine but the only problem I see is, a bit slower than 4.7
That is a “feature” that Avast should introduce: the availability of older Avast builds for those for experience problems with the current release.
You will see this on the websites of some competitors, since as AV software has gone from simply scanning for viruses to becoming more integrated into the functions of the OS (e.g. rootkit scanning, network activity, etc.) it also has the habit to interact negatively with MS security updates, firewalls, anti-spyware apps, etc.
Having problems with 4.8, I’d revert to 4.7 if I had that build, which unfortunately I don’t.
I have been using avast for 4 years and during that time I have been supporting a group of fellow users of avast. Never in that time have I had cause to recommend to any of them to revert to a previous version - up to this day. For myself I have only used previous versions to conduct comparative tests.
I prefer to engage with the avast community and the ever ready help of the avast team team in resolving issues and moving forward rather than turning back. I have yet to be disappointed.
However, there is a site that specializes in maintaining previous builds of well known software and Tech refers to it in this post. Please look there for the last production build of avast 4.7.
I’m glad that Avast works well for you. However, that is not the case for everyone. It has nothing to do with moving back, but to getting back to work, particularly when some issues do not seem to be resolved so quickly. Yes, it’s great to have a forum with assistance from other users, but I’d also like to see an Avast programmer stop by every once in awhile and see the issues that have hit a number of us not so inexperienced computer users.
EVERY company has software releases that cause unforeseen problems. That is why pencils have erasers, and why operating systems have system restores, and users have backup programs, imaging software, etc.
I think one has to be practical in life, and software installations (even free ones) require an investment of time of the user: to understand how to install it, to understand its features and to get it to do what the user intends. When it doesn’t, it wouldn’t hurt to have the option to revert back to a previous build that was found to be working. Sometimes, simpler builds have less problems.
Addendum: While I appreciate the link to filehippo for previous Avast versions, I for one would ALWAYS want to download security products (antivirus, anti-spyware, MS patches, firewall software) DIRECTLY from the creator of the software for security reasons. One can’t be too careful these days, what with hardware itself being susceptible to tampering (Seagate drives being a recent example).
I have read your previous posts and I understand and sympathize with your concerns.
The avast team participate in this forum more than I have seen for any similar product - and they have done so with your personal issue - clearly not to your satisfaction.
I tried to offer you a practical solution to your desire for an earlier release at a site I know and personally have used. None of us who assist here can make a reality of your wish that the avast team provide that service for you. Others have asked … it has not happened … I doubt it will.
The avast developers do a little more than drop by every once in a while, this is one of the only support forums where I have seen as much user interaction with directly the developers. You only need to browse the avast 4 home/pro and other forums to see that.
It is that interaction and the passage of information, dump reports, remote connections (have been used on a few occasions), so they gain get the information on a user problem that they haven’t been able to simulate in the labs. Without those prepared to do this it would probably take longer to resolve the problem so whilst stepping back to an earlier version might help your problem, it doesn’t help resolve the problem for avast users that might be experiencing the problem wit that version.
The problem of getting the program directly from the source being, avast doesn’t offer old versions only the current version I guess they are of the believe that there is a reason why the new features/updates/optimisations, etc. are included. So sites like filehippo or oldversion are often your only option, so you have to trust that these reputable sites arent going to have any unwelcome guests in your download.
I think exactly the same.
Any particular problem that we can help troubleshooting?
Well, I can only speak from my experience, not for anyone else. I know with my particuliar issue, I asked a number of direct questions that never got answered.
I received a number of posts from those who represented themselves simply as members of the Avast forum, not as Avast developers, programmers, or technicians. I’m always happy to accept advice from other users, but I would hardly call that a definitive answer. I can tell you how to fix many Microsoft problems but Microsoft would hardly call me their definitive spokesman.
A number of steps were suggested to me, all of which I followed without success, EXCEPT for the last request to modify the registry on someone else’s machine and intentionally blue screen that machine. That seemed to me to be a last resort, unless Avast guarantees that these actions will cause no harm, ie. disk drive corruption, and/or result in potential security issues.
Competitive AV products (which I will not mention) do provide roll-back features as well as previous builds. There must be a reason for that. I would hardly call that “moving backward” but rather catering to the needs of their users who can’t find stability in the current build.
