I am still using Avast Home 4.7.1098 due to being on a very slow dial-up connection. I had no trouble updating the virus database until today, when my registration key expired. When I entered the new key, Avast began downloading all sorts of oddly named files and now wants to download over 6 MB of “setif av pro” and “setup av pro” when I try to update the virus database (not the program) manually. Is this normal, and if not, what should I do? Downloading 4.8 from scratch is not really an option because of the file size.
Can’t you just download the full installer of the latest version somewhere else - and transfer it to your computer on a flash drive, for example? (and use it to update the existing installation)
Version 4.7 is very old… and I’m not completely sure if the latest virus database even work with that (i.e. I’m not 100% sure that your virus database was really updating recently).
You cannot update version 4.7 anymore… you need to upgrade to 4.8
There are not only bells and whistles… new program upgrades are mandatory to have the latest protection.
If I were you, I’ll download once the latest 5 version, uninstall version 4.7 and start again.
Suffer once for downloading it (version 5) and be happy afterwards.
Do you use a download manager?
Thanks, guys, for the fast response. I can use the download manager in Opera, but it is difficult because I have only one telephone line and the download would take about three hours.
I hadn’t considered that but will look into it (perhaps having someone burn it to a CD and mail it to me).
After a reboot, the weird downloads stopped and normal updating resumed. Looking at the file names, I think that the unexpected downloads were an erroneous attempt to upgrade my Avast Home installation to Avast Pro. I recall having received a small software update along with a regular virus database update last year, right before the database updates increased in size. Checking the Avast folder, I saw that the database appeared to be up-to-date, so I think that 4.7 is still being updated along with 4.8, but I will update to the latest version when I can.
Thanks again for your help. I look forward to continuing to use Avast products.
