Yesterday Avast! asked me to install the new version. I didn’t wanted it but I made a mistake and I started the setup process. I aborted it and I got a window saying that the software woul be damaged. ;_; And the file avast.setup asked to pass the ZA firewall even if I gave it rights to pass without asking.
So I decided to uninstall and install Avast! again. This morning I started my pc and Avast said I needed to restart the pc again. I downloaded the Avast! exe file from the site again, but I guess that’s the last version.
I have the old version, downloaded three weeks ago, burned on a cd. But if I’ll install it will all the virus definitions be installed if I update it? Or will just the virus definition 0616-4 be installed and not the previous one? I mean, will I have a hole between the virus definition that are in the old .exe files and the last one?
As for the version 4.7 I’ve read it scans less files. Will it be dangerous? I mean what if one of those files are infected. Avast! will detect it.
Thanks!
I f you re-install the old version then when Avast does its update it will pull all required updates down. But I would recommend using the updated version as it appears a tad faster on scans. Edit : If you aborted the setup you may have corrupted some files so a fresh install would be recommended
I did a fresh install for the new version. And in order to uninstall the old version I used the Avast! uninstall utility. So I guess tha was ok.
I was atad concerned about the updates. I think I’ll keep the new version if it will not give me problems.
Thanks for answering.
I think the update manager ‘should’ correct this… no need to uninstall and install again.
The uninstall+install operation is recommend only if you indeed have trouble. Most cases this is not necessary.
The avast utility should be used only ‘after’ the Control Panel > Add/remove option, not before. And ‘only’ if the Add/Remove brings errors and not in all cases…

So do I have to uninstall Avast! again? So far i haven’t had any problem.
After using the utility I used regseeker and deleted everything with an Avast! reference. So far no problems. i did the same thing when i had to uninstall and install Avast! 4.6 some time ago, while I was looking for the source of a possible conflict with MS antispyware. And it didn’t gave me problems back then either.
Thanks
No… again no need for that… only IF you have trouble…
Definetivelly avast does not NEED to be uninstalled to be upgraded to a new version.
By the way, no conflicts with MS Antispyware (not Windows Defender) 8)
