avast 4.x on W98 can’t handle the latest vps update.
It is too large (over 200Mb)
As far as we know now, there is nothing you can do to make it work.
Time to get and use newer software/hardware.

I do not have the money to upgrade to my hardware or OS. If my parents win the lottery, than may be will be able to do that.
It seems that after 7 years with Avast on Windows 98, will have to find something else. Thanks Avast Team for protecting my Windows 98 computer up to now.
It will be said to have to go somewhere else. Thanks again.
Would possibley using Kernelex work? I know a friend of my that has Windows 98 as well is using that to get some new programs to run. I have not tried it yet.

Did you see the link i posted above, if so you would have found a alternative
ClamWin http://www.clamwin.com/
for realtime protection you need to add Clam Sentinel http://clamsentinel.sourceforge.net/

Yes. I did. I download it but it slow the computer to a point that it is not usable. It keeps scanning and using up all of the memory and CPU. Avast worked well with this computer. I am sad that it does not work now.

There may be a solution at ClamWin forum http://forums.clamwin.com

Did you remove avast completely (the uninstall tool) before installing ClamWin ?
system

Might have to check it. But I am going to miss Avast. I was hoping they would compress the data file like they did in the past.

I can not get clam to work. Is there an avast install file that I can download? I am going to install it and keep it. At least I will be protected from the old viruses with it.

I think I found the avast install file on another site:
http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/6635/
Is this site safe to download avast 4.8.1368 from?
Yes, but your biggest issue besides running outdated anti-virus is you need a lot more RAM.
256 MB is not enough anymore. RAM is fairly cheap so adding 2 GB RAM would go a long ways
in solving your predicament. Even if you download v4.xxx you will not be getting anymore vps updates.
See https://blog.avast.com/2015/05/06/support-for-older-avast-windows-consumer-version-will-end/
When was the last time you cleaned your HDD?
Try using http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
Your best bet in the long run and will perhaps save you pain and suffering is to find a way to upgrade you present computer.
Or save up enough money to buy a new one. Either way running outdated anything will cause you nothing but headaches.
Running an old dinosaur is not good any way you look at it. Since Microsoft stopped supporting XP people have moved on to
either Win7 or Win10. Even my Linux (in a virtual machine) needs to be updated from time to time.

A 256Mb ram stick is only about $2,50
A 512Mb one is around $5,00
If you have onboard video, put in a video card and things will speed up noticeably.
But if you look around a bit you can have a PIII system fully working for around $50
Throw XP or Vista on it and enjoy the latest avast version

The motherboard max supported ram is 256MB. I can not upgrade to more ram. I live in a poor country. Can not afford new computer. This Windows 98 computer has served me well for many many years.
I installed the older version of Avast and updates did not work. But three days ago, the updates start to work again.

The size of the VPS updates for older version has been heavily reduced.

Thank you Avast Support for fixing Avast. A few days ago the updates download without any problem. Thank you very much. I can now have some safety when going on line with my Windows 98 system. I have not been on line much since the problem showed up.
