Ok, I just disabled the self-defense and also booted into safe mode and did a successful system restore.
I hadn’t tried safe mode before, so that could have been it, but I’d say it’s far more likely it was the self-defense.
If so, that’s something that definitely either needs to be fixed soon or highly publicized.
In the same boat using Windows XP SP2 Avast 4.8. System Restore will only work in Safe Mode.
Another user found by disabling avast’s self protection, SR worked. Re-enable afterwards if that is the method used.
In his case, save mode option wasn’t available.

I didn’t try disabling it and doing it in regular mode. I both disabled and did safe mode, but I do figure I probably didn’t need save point.
Point is, though, this must be clearly documented somewhere by Avast or even better, fixed, if possible.
What was it that you were trying to resolve by going back with SR in the first place ?
The problem is that System Restore in itself isn’t 100% infallible either and I’m not sure if going back using SR might not be causing more issues.
Should be documented for sure, but how many rally read the help files? I don’t know if it is broke, it’s there to keep unauthorized changes to it’s file from being made.
SR saves the strangest things, it may be just one avast file…
Agree with DavidR on the “perfection” of SR. Not saying it isn’t handy, but… see the line above.
What’s the difference really? System Restore actually did fix my problem here.
The problem here is that the new Avast 4.8 blocks system restore and that has to be fixed or noted.
The difference being if it was a problem with avast that you were trying to resolve and if it were likely to effect the current avast installation.
No. The issue was with my WLAN NIC driver. I needed to revert back to a previous state.
Avast was working fine.
I’d love to hear from Avast on this issue.
Is it a bug that needs to be fixed or a feature that should be better documented?
I’m only trying to help out the person who encounters this next since I spent a good bit of time dealing with this.
Or disabling the self-defense module.
Discovered this problem myself yesterday with someone running Avast 4.8 who’d simultaneously installed CA AntiSpyware & Parental Control from the CA IS 2008 package, and received an avast! program udate from 1147 beta to 1169. The PC was chronically freezing after a short time. After 2 failed SR attempts I just uninstalled the CA stuff. Didn’t try safe mode but it would have been my next choice.
So is this a bug or a feature then? Or is it a Microsoft issue?
I can see this being an issue for your customers, if they don’t know about it.

You can consider a bug. They will try to address this on next program update.
What I’ve wrote is a workaround.
how to disable self-defense?
to temporarily disable the avast self-defense function:
avast Programs settings > Troubleshooting

Ok. Thanks.
