avast 4.8 constantly having rpc problem (red dot on blue ball)

Hi,
Idk what’s wrong with avast but all of a sudden it just doesn’t start. I look it up on the services and the main services are running except for the mail and web scan. I tried repairing it and it works again, but after a while (maybe a day or so or even just a simple restart) the problem is back again. So I uninstalled it using avast uninstaller software but it still does it. I checked the logs for anything and found these:

AAVM: VPS load failed, trying to get a fresh copy…
Function setifaceUpdatePackages() has failed. Return code is 0x20000004, dwRes is 20000004.
aswServ::AavmStart ERROR…

I also happen to have an issue with the VPS, sometimes it updates properly and once in a while it say the update package is broken, but so far this update error has happened only once after I did a reinstallation and i’ve been able to update correctly.

Idk what seems to be the problem. I’ve had avast in my computer for over a year now and I’ve had worse things happen to my computer but it still runs. Now it just decides to act crazy. Hope somebody can help me figure out.

  1. Try and repair avast 4.8 by going to control pannel add remove programes select avast and click on repair and reboot. Should be ok after this.
Really you should be starting to go onto Avast version 5 soon, i think support will stop on this later on this year!

Question. Did you have any other anti virus on the computer previous to avast?

  1. Suggest try a run of MBAM MALWAREBYTES FREE and see what this will unearth any spyware to be removed as a last resort.

We need to know what computer & operating system you are using ram etc to give more clues what is up!

Hi,

As for additional information, please do the reboot your system after repair or installation.

cheers,

Hello,

I’ve tried repairing it through the add/remove program. It does fix the problem, however it comes right back after a couple of days or two reboots after doing the repair.

No, It was a clean install after building my pc.

I’ve also tried scanning using AVG Scan, Trend Micro House Call and Ad-aware but nothing came up. In addition to avast, I also have COMODO Firewall installed. Just the Firewall though leaving out the Anti-Virus coupled with it and they’ve been working together for the past year and nothing has happened up until this.

I’m running on an Intel E7500 C2D Processor with 2GB Kingston 800 ddr2 Memory. My OS however is XP SP2 but i’ve been updating it for the past year. I haven’t installed Windows 7 coz of the fear or having issues with some applications and software builders I’m using. And yes i know Windows 7 has a virtual machine that runs XP which i’ve yet to try.

Anyway, I’m gonna try running what you suggested and see if anything comes up.

thanks for the help
