Avast 4.8 headache

it only happens on the nvidia chipset box - after auto-update Avast is quasi freezing the box, no icon spin but the HDD is shuffling. Only way out is boot into safe-mode uninstall avast and all is normal after the next bootup. Then I install Avast again and it usually works - this happened now twice to my wife’s box!

Another Avast annoyance on the nvidia box is it always wants to install the complete software (green notification). Never saw on this box a blue notification.

No problems like this on the Ali chipset system.

I hope you get the problem fixed quick or my wife tells me to dump Avast :frowning:

What if you check the option “Disable rootkit scan on system startup” in avast! settings / Troubleshooting page - does it make any difference?
When the system is frozen - can you move your mouse cursor? Did you try to wait for a few minutes?

The mouse cursor ist the only thing that still moves but for everything else you wait ages.
Got the process explorer into startup and that seems to indicate a possible conflict with the Realtek Audio panel startup.

I update this driver and see how it goes…report back here soon

Okay, updated the Realtek HD driver but no joy!

Process explorer tells once the RTHDCPL.exe is processed the system is quasi freezing except for the mouse cursor. After 30 minutes (or so) the system may return to normal. After reboot in safe mode and uninstalling Avast 4.8 all is fine again.

It’s an nforce 430 chipset board - I am out of ideas

I’m not sure if you missed Igor’s post above but you should have a look at it…

Thanks
Vlk

There is also an existing thread on this same issue here.

It might be better to combine both on the older thread rather than running with two.

when the system is frozen I hardly can change settings, no? ::slight_smile:
want me to wait 30 minutes for the system to become responsive again is not an excellent idea :-\

Edit: have read the other thread and try the suggestion IF I see the system idle

Followed the advice in the other thread and excluded RTHDCPL.EXE but it makes no difference.

Im having similar probs but whats happening with me, everything loads except my networks, i cant access net or bluetooth and then system freezes.

Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
Any other security programs that could interfere?
In XP/Vista, is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?

Okay, have completed checking all remaining options on the troubleshooting page including disable rootkit scan - even when you click delay Avast the problem is the same. Sounds like the problem is more fundamental than a feature conflict.

ideas welcome :-\

Is there any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’?

the only error in AntiVirus events is a SetiUpdate() function failed… - otherwise, nothing else of concern…all looks clean!

I mean System and Applications areas also, not only the Antivirus one.

Sorry, all clean and no warnings or errors!

What’s going wrong seems highly legitimate :-\

Well, after a fresh full wipe XP installation 4.8 is working fine!

The only thing that changed is no more XP SP3 RC installed - possibly that has something to do with the problem?

Just to try to take a look at the combination of products I have installed SP3 on one on my WinXP Pro SP2 systems along with avast 4.8.

So far, I have encountered no problems.

Okay, Alan, then the XP installation was somehow borked - it was due to a fresh install anyway :-*
