Avast 4.8 Home can NOT install the Microsoft update patch

Dear All:

My PC can NOT install any Microsoft update patch after I install the Asast!
Do anyone know how to fix the problem?

I formated the HD (40GB) and re-installed the OS (XP professional), then I updated the Microsoft patch until sp3. After that I download the newest Avast Home 4.8 and installed. However after I installed the Office 2007, I found I can NOT update any Microsoft update patch, not matter by manual or by automatic. The patch download is OK, but installation is failed.

1 OS: windows-xp professional (Chinese) & sp3
2 Avast: Home 4.8 (Chinese version, 4.8-1201)
3 HW: Intel Pentium 4 1.7GHz, 2.00 GB RAM

avast! shouldn’t interfere with windows updates it isn’t a firewall and it doesn’t block.

It just scans content and alerts to infection, I assume you aren’t getting any virus alert from avast ?

So I don’t think it is avast that makes the installation fail, I have had numerous installation failures over the years (none related to avast) mainly trying to update .net framework.

What was the update that failed ?
What is the error message displayed ?
Have you tried a google search for that update installation failure ?

Don’t let your email published (it will only allow spambots to send you spam).
Could you post Windows Update error?

Thank you,

My Avast is working fine, not matter during installation or after. Also it did not show any virus attacked
By the way, I had already re-format my PC, and re-install XP and Avast for 2 times, however the status did not improve. It always failed when I installing the update patch.

There are no any error message, but show patch installation fail

I had the same problem.
when I searched for an explanation of the error message of the update, I found that it was because of my anti-virus or so. I stopped my anti-virus and even tried to install them manually in the safe mode. but, in vain. Avast indeed doesn’t interfere with windows updates. because the problem was coming from a malware called “Winbudget”(it launches as soon as you’re connect to the net). you can easily get rid of it by an online scan =>> http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ .
if the problem is not coming from an infection you should use “Dial-a-fix”, which fixes all the problems of the windows updates.

I hope this could help you to fix your problem.

Other full computer on-line scanning:
Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)
