I have Avast Home edition (4.8.1368 to be precise) running on a fully patched Windows XP machine. The automatic updater does not seem to offer me the upgrade option to Version 5. Is Version 5 in beta or something similar and is this why the updater will not offer it?
Any help on finding out how to update to Ver 5 would be much appreciated (I’m assuming Ver 5 is “better” than 4.8!).
I had the same problem. One of my XP PCs got a message that an update was available, and it automatically updated to Avast 5. The other PC never got the message. I then had to download the install program. I suggest that you
download the Avast 5 install program
make certain that you know what your Avast licence number is
uninstall Avast 4.8
install Avast 5, you can use your old licence.
Although Avast 5 is supposed uninstall 4.8, I don’t like the mess it leaves in the registry. You want to uninstall 4.8 first because you may avoid having to clean out all the references to avast 4 — like I did.
Remove avast 4.8 using control panel.
Download this tool to make a complete clean removal http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Then download avast 5.0 free install it!
No need to save the licence key after you’ve installed avast 5.0 you can register directly but if you want you can use your old licence key!
