Avast!4.8 Home Edition problem

I just noticed this a.m. that my Avast! tray icon is missing. I am sure this is a simple fix and I don’t have any clue why it disappeared. My main worry is that it isn’t running in the background. I have it set up to run on start up but I still want the little icon for reassurance. Can anyone help a senior here? Please. :o

  1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
    or
  2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
    or
  3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
    or
  4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

Are there any other startup items that should have been activated?

Would you suggest temporarily disabling other security software and reinstalling?
In my case that would be Adaware (adwatch), and Zone Alarm.

Could be the culprit here, preventing the creation of the startup entry of avast.
Maybe checking its settings to allow ashdisp.exe to start.
You can try just repair your installation.

:frowning: i installed avast home edition and it has slowed, no bogged down the operation of computer.
Win 98
IE6
avast home edition
build feb 2009
4.8.1335 xtrem tool verison1.9.4.0

It takes a VERY LONG time to go to any web pages it also takes a long time to down load email. I am using outlook express.

Should I just delete avast and look for another program?

The computer seems to be running constantly is that normal?

Just got this message Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Not enough storage is available to process this command.

Total time: 44:29

Any help out there?

This should really be in it’s own topic, so if you have any problems with the solution please start a separate topic.

Thanks, that’s exactly what it was set to do, “Lock startup section”.

I’ll disable it when I get a chance to reinstall.

Post back the results

Disabled Ad-Watch
Using msconfig, unchecked Ad-Watch from startup
Using Add/Remove programs, ran a repair installation of Avast!
Rebooted
Everything seems to be working…

Thanks again.

Off topic:
Got an alert from Zone Alarm as Avast was loading.
Why does “VRDB” want to "Act as a server?

VRDB? How did ZA identify VRDB? It’s run by ashServ.exe afaik.
