Currently reading the July '08 issue of PC Magazine - on pg. 48, Neil Rubenking (who I’ve respected for years now!) just reviewed avast! AV 4.8 Home Edition and awarded the program a 4/5 rating - the full article can be read online HERE, if interested.
I’m running avast! on my VISTA Dell laptop w/ Windows Defender - Rubenking states that this newest version of avast! has sypware/rootkit protection, also - then recommends in one of his posts in the PC Mag Forums that Windows Defender does NOT need to be running actively w/ the current version of avast! - hmmm, not sure - but for those who have more experience w/ this combo, any opinions? So far, I’ve not had any problems - :-\
Thanks, Guys! Well, as indicated in my post, I just read the review in the recent issue of PC Mag - don’t usually peruse the online magazine sites, but probably should! :o
At any rate, my main question concerns Neil Rubenking’s statement about not running Windows Defender w/ the newest version of avast! (which I am doing currently) - not sure ‘what basis’ he has for this opinion, and I may need to leave a post on the PC Mag forum - thanks again - Dave
I recommend you Ignore Neil’s “Comments” regarding security programs; he & I
have been butting heads for quite some time on the PC Mag forums to the extent he now bans my Posts in their “Privacy and Security Help” sub-forum .
Probably he did a “Review” of Avast based on my contant advocacy of Avast.
For what he really thinks is the best AV, see the Thread at http://discuss.pcmag.com/forums/thread/1004401637.aspx .
Spiritsongs - thanks for your response (and that of others) - I’ve been trying to ESCAPE Norton for years (still have a pre-installed Norton Suite on my desktop computer; running two ‘wireless’ laptops in the home w/o Norton - yeh! ;D) - read the ‘interaction’ that you had w/ Neil - boy, w/ his vast experience, I’m not sure ‘why’ he seems so wedded to Norton - hope this isn’t the fact that he is funded by them? - but, I’m not having a problem w/ the combo of avast! + VISTA Windows Defender at the moment, so will just continue on my ‘merry pathway’ - again, thanks all for your advice! Dave
To someone who has experience with the 4.8 on Win Vista. I have a querry. I just got Avast and after it does it’s thing, scanning, it reports; “cannot scan…xx. is password protected”. This is my brand new laptop so I don’t get it. Did it not scan? How do I un-password protect it? Thanks for any help.
