Avast 4.8 re-license, repair.... older system probably won't support 5.0.418.0

I got the red pop-up, then the larger yellow upgrade page which now indicates just two days to upgrade to Avast 5.0.

First problem is that reading posts here indicates my system will not support 5.0. Am I in the situation that I cannot extend 4.8 license for the less-than-a-year left until the Dec 2010 date for Avast ceasing support for 4.8 free. If I can extend the license, how would it be done.

Second problem is that downloading 5.0 free directly from the Avast pop-up window stalled. When I went to exit, I got a message box that I may corrupt things. I did exit, and now computer is stalling. List given upon cntrl/alt/delete indicates “Ashserv (Not Responding)”. Quit-task on this removes it. Then computer unfreezes and both blue balls disappear from tray. This all leads me to think I would be best re-installing Avast 4.8. (A thread here gave an address to do this, but would I be able to get the license for less than a year?)

(I did not try to install 5.0…rather saved it to desktop)

(If there is no way to use Avast beyond 2 days, what anti-virus program is recommended to help keep this computer going a couple more months?)

Many thanks for any help with this.

It isn’t so much the age of the computer as avast 5.0 should run on the computer if 4.8 can, what is important is what OS you are using ()which you didn’t mention) ?

The pop-up is I believe in relation to an offer that is available to upgrade to one of the paid versions of avast Pro or the avast Internet Security. Note the word that you used, ‘upgrade’ and not update which are different.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Thanks. Will try repair.

Large yellow ad (following earlier small red popup) announces my license expires in 2 days (has been a countdown, each day) but says nothing about renewing license…just upgrade choices to three 5. Avast options.

My operating system is older than what a thread quoted Avast statement says will support Avast 5.

You could try the SSL Registration Page (avast! 4.x only): https://secure.avast.com/scripts/register.php?lang=ENG. Select the My registration key has expired, I need a new one option and complete the form.

Yes, but what is that OS ?

And your question or comment is ???
