I have just installed AVAST 4.8 and run a scan. It found 2 trojans which were put in the chest.

When I went back to open the chest I get a n Application Error message - memeory cannot be read.

Any thoughts please?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

Does the message continues after booting?
Can you say what is the infected file name, where was it found (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx)?
What avast! version and virus database are you using? (see About dialog of avast!)

Thanks - I tried a repair but no luck. I tried a total uninstall and a new reinstall but still the problem.

I couldn’t get back into the “chest” to see the virus it claimed to have found. (it couls have been “…Bubble”?? Can’t really remember.

Use avast uninstaller to fully uninstall avast.

If it is Bagle it could be corrupted avast installation…
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
  2. Boot.
  3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
  4. Boot.
  5. Install again the latest avast! version.
  6. Boot.
  7. Check and post the results.
