i have been using avast for quite sometime and was working very well with outlook 2002. I have windows xp pro sp2, outlook xp.
It was working well until all of sudden i can no longer send emails while avast is turned on to scan email outbound. If stop the on access process and avast does not scan my emails i can receive email.s
the settings in outlook xp from my isp provider are the following:
incoming email server POP3 - pophm.sympatico.ca
outgoing mail server smtp - smtphm.sympatico.ca
under internet email settings in outlook
mail account - pophm.sympatico.ca
outgoing server: my outgoing server smtp requires authentication is checked as well as use same settings as my incoming mail server is also checked (turned on)
Connection - connect using my local area network (lan) is turned on
Advance: incoming server (pop3) 995 (this has been given to me by my isp provider)
"this server requires an SSL secured connection SSL is turned on
Outgoing server (smtp) 25
"this server requires an SSL secured connection SSL is turned on
the settings in avast under internet mail are the following
settings are all set to High
Internet Mail: POP 110, SMTP 25, IMAP 143, NNTP 119
these were the original settings and it was working fine, before. I do not think that avast is scanning my emails anymore.
i need to know how I can it to send my emails. I have tried already twice to uninstall it and this did not work. it is connecting to the internet but not sending emails. Please help urgent
First XP SP3 has been out for over a year and closes a number of vulnerabilities.
If you have MS Outlook 2002 installed then you should be using the Outlook/Exchange provider, this has a plug-in which should be running inside Outlook (ensure a) the avast outlook/exchange provider is enabled and b) check the avast plug-in within MS Outlook isn’t disabled. As Outlook with the avast plug-in enable and outlook/exchange provider running there should be no issue about SSL email.
You can’t set the Internet Mail provider to monitor SSL ports/connections, which is for other pop3 clients like outlook express, thunderbird, etc. The whole point of SSL is to keep prying eyes out including AVs, so avast from the outside can’t scan encrypted email (currently) or handle the SSL transmission, so it fails.
i no longer have the avast plug-in in Outlook XP. Outlook/Exchange option in Avast seems to be a little faded (not as dark as the others.) I have tried to uninstall and reinstall but this does not work. therefore i gather it is not working. do you have any suggestions of how to re-activate the plug-in it is set to high. All of the settings are set to high. I thought perhaps to use the repair option - maybe that might work. what do you think?
Win XP Sp3 had alot of issues on my laptop therefore XP SP2 was reinstated.
Also do you know Avast 4.81368 is compatible to win 7 64 bit. I noticed when it installed on my other laptop it went in the “Programs File” and not into “Programs File x86 ( for 64bit)” is this correct? I am wondering if there would be any problems in future if a virus was found and a system file or other files would need to be deleted would cause problems, etc. registry and so forth.
I can’t help with any practical issues in Outlook as I don’t use it, but if the avast plug-in is disabled, then no amount of reinstalls of avast is going to resolve that as without the plug-in
These are some of the locations of disabled items in other versions of Outlook, you will have to see if you can find a comparable location in Outlook 2002:
Make sure the avast plug-in/add-in is not disabled in MS Outlook:
Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-ins > Manage Disabled items.
Outlook 2003 > Help > About > Disabled items
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.
avast 4.8.x is compatible with win7 64bit, I would have though that there would be more issues with MS Outlook 2002 being compatible with win7 and possibly more so in the 64bit version. That is if you are hoping to use this in win7 also.
