avast 4 and avg 6

win xp pro avast 4.1.139 and avg 6. avg 6 has all items in msconfig startup and process list removed. all check marks for any item under avg6 unchecked. yet on bootup get msg avast sees avg 6 as running and closing p2p inst msgr and std shield. email works and a manual scan works . so does updates etc. does anyone know what avast is seeing that causes conflict or what to shut off in avg ???

AVG is still loading its file system filter driver which is what avast is looking for it.

To prevent loading of the AVG driver (shouldn’t have any implications to AVG’s on-demand scanning capabilities), fire regedit, open

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AvgFsh

and change the value Start from whatever it is to 4 (which means disabled).

Then reboot, and that’s it.

and your scan engine is quite old. Update the program

Note that with 98SE having AvgFsh key, there is no start value at all,
I need not do any workaround about and AVG6/avast4
like each other…

Poutnik, if you intend to have two av at the same time you will get into hot water
Desinstall AVG (which I used for more than one year) and stay with avast! For a second scanner (not resident), I recommend BitDefender 7.0 Free ;D

poutnik,

They may not like each other for long.
Both have resident scanners, and I am surprised that you have not had compatibility issues already.

Technical is correct. Have a backup other than AVG. If you feel the need to double check your system, an online scanner is another way to go, but I only would use Kaspersky. As Technical knows, I am not a Panda fan.

techie

They live together for two years(avast32->Avast4).
All I made for AVG not being the second resident was I disabled resident AVG checking at AVG Control Centre, shut the Centre down and deleted its startup entry. I use it only to second check of downloaded matters.

The incompatibility issues with multiple on-access AV shield generally only apply to NT-based Windows (i.e. WinNT/2000/XP/2003).

Also, avast4 and AVG7 are an exception - they do play nicely together (even under XP) with both on-access shields loaded. We have tested this recently together with the Grisoft guys, and it really works very well…

But no so in the case of AVG6.

Hope this helps,
Vlk

:frowning: AVG 7.0 is no more a freeware :stuck_out_tongue:
