Hi. Few days ago I installed Avast 4 and despite this program seems to be fantastic, I’m having a one major problem with it.
The VPS file seems to get destroyed every once in a while. When I click on the tray icon I get an error message as well as choosing the “Start Avast! Antivirus” option in the tray icon menu. Avast has now done it 2 times in the last 3 days. The only thing that seems to help in this problem is to reinstall avast. Updating doesn’t seem to help (since I already have the newest vps file and avast doesn’t install anything new).
After avast is reinstalled it seems to work fine for some time but suddenly when I look at my computer I see the red rounded error sign in the ‘a’ tray icon and the error has repeated.
Below is an attached screen capture of these error messages. I really don’t know what is going wrong or what should I do.
I’m using finnish Win XP Pro and I’ve checked the hard disk with chkdsk and there’s no corruptions found.
I’m not sure if it’s necessary to send the vps file right now because avast updated new virus informations just a while ago and the “VPS file destroyed” error is gone for now. I’ll send the file 400.vps file to Vlk if/when the file gets destroyed again… let’s see what will happen.
But the RPC error is still there. I searched the forums for it but I didn’t find anything useful for me to do… Maybe I’ll check them out again with a bit closer look.
And as a reply to “whocares”:
RPCSS is running and is set to automatic and I have installed all security fixes from windows update.
The ram should be ok because I have tested them with memtest few weeks ago. My internet connection is through a 10 Mbps lan network with sygate personal firewall.
Is the “avast antivirus” service running? (Control Panel → Administrative Tools → Services). If not, try to start it… is this possible? If not, what error messages are you getting?
