Will the Linux Edition that should be release next mounth be free for home users?
I would like an answer to the above question because I am setting up a Linux box on my home network and looking for an AV solution for it.
You only need it if yoy keep some Windows partitions Like WindowsXP on C drive and Your windows Data drive on the Drive if you make backups of all of your data and formattet all of your win hdd you don`t a anti virus for linux if you still want it try the open source http://www.clamav.net/ http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/ClamAV/1110347525/1
http://www.sosdg.org/clamav-win32/ http://www.sosdg.org/
avast! for Linux features an antivirus solution for the popular Linux platform. The version for home users is intended for testing of the operating system and for scanning of hard drive partitions used by Windows operating systems.
Shouldn’t Linux have antivirus software just like Windows does? I notice that F-Prot, BitDefender, McAfee, and so forth all have Linux AV products available.
But linux distro dont need anti-virus it has a build in hardware firewall in every distro and as long the distro is updated with the new updates and with system monitoring enable where should be no need for any AV but try CLAM AV if you really want anti virus but if many former windows user change to linux where will some day come virus but the problem will never it was bad as windows because windows and specific WinXP 90% of windows user don
t anything about the danger where pc is in or can come in very easy.
Okay, I see. Right now I’m new to Linux. I’ve been practicing setting it up using Knoppix on CD so I will have a better idea on how to set up to run with WinXP on the other network computer and printer as well as wireless adapter PCI card. So, Linux is a lot like Macs in as much as they don’t seem to have a virus threat like Windows does in general. Is this correct?
Also, I plan to use SuSE Linux 10.0 since this is the distribution I have downloaded. I’m just waiting on a hard drive in the mail so the machine will be duel boot with Win98SE on one drive and SuSE on the other drive. I’ll need to set it up so it is a dual boot machine. I’m sort of excited about getting into this whole Linux-Open Source world out there. I think I have officially become a “Geek” like the old MS-DOS days of yesteryear.
The dual booting is no problem Suse it up automatic it is Grum i think and it protect your windows 98se partition and your windows data partition to but i am not sure have i got it right befor i will instal Suse 10 Pro is it the Eval / commercial free dowload or the open source version you have download i only have one of them but i cot download it in 1-4 hours and when i see the dvd so i rember what my friend toll me to do because it is a littel tricky if you have not get any advice from someone who have try to instal it befor. But you should think about join the Linuxquestions.org support forum but you have to wait sometime to get an answer for your questions and it is not for newbie at least only if you have more when 1 pc so you can poted with 1 of them and instal suse with the other one.
Hope this helps
LIFE
a guy who have use the last year to find out if i realy want change OS and i want that badly because in my openion Windows/WindowsXP is a piece of s!!t
After 2 year with WindowsXP Home i see the new vista can only be worst!!!
I’ve dowloaded the open source version of SuSE. I’m using the Knoppix distro to learn Linux basics until I’m comfortable with it. Then I will install the SuSE. Right now I can boot up Knoppix and set up the LAN connection to the router using Ndiswrapper and get my network shared files and printer using Samba. This is so cool! I will also check out the support forum you suggested. Thanks!
My main machine is on WinXp and it is constantly needing Window updates because of the latest threats. It is almost as if it is an Anti-virus program as it’s own bulleye and a operating system as a second function. ???
You should do like i have done think about the programs you a think if where is some of the need badly maybe can be use in linux with a windows Emulator when you have found ut if where some or non in the start run both windows and linux to you can use it to what what when dump WindowsXP.
Thank you LIFE. I have installed the open source version of Suse 10.
There seems to be no joy from the staff concerning this topic. I have installed the F-Prot command line AV for Linux. It works with the KMail email program. That is the Kmail Anti-virus wizard has F-Prot as an option but not Avast.
I once used MS-DOS F-Prot in combination with Avast with Win98. F-Prot would scan the boot sectors and root directory on bootup and Avast did the rest after Windows started up. Used a batch file to update F-prot from a DOS window.
F-Prot for Linux appears to be very similar to F-Prot for DOS.

I would like linux for home users also, I have a linux box that has gotten windows viruses and tried to transfer them to my windows machines on the network (though it did nothing to linux >:D). If I had avast on linux, I could plug that hole, I have it on its own VPN at the moment for a temp fix.
Thank you. I posted my first real problem there today:
