Avast 4 Home & ADS...

I was scanning my pc with Ad-aware SE, and the results show that I have ADS: Vendor: Other
Category: Data Miner
Object Type:Alternate Data Stream
Location:C:.…\Avast 4 Home Setup\setupeng
avast.exe:Zone Iden…
This has a rating of 5. What do I do? Do I delete these files and if I do will avast! work? How dangerous are ADS files?

For sure it’s a false positive, i.e., it’s not a real spyware or virus.
This file is the avast! setup (install) executable. It’s clean.
You should add it to the ignore list of Ad-aware SE. Strange, did you update Ad-aware recently?
I use it and it never recognized avast! as being a spyware ::slight_smile:

Snap no detection of avast’s installation executable with Adaware SE, latest version (1.05) and definitions file updates (SE1R42 28.04.2005).

What are your version number and definitions file details?

NTFS ADS can be attached to ANY file. So this is really not connected to avast! in any way. Except that ADS is atachet to avast! file. Kaspersky AV does the same thing and can attach ADS to any file.

NTFS ADS can be attached to ANY file.
Dooh! wasn't thinking, that would also explain why I would be unlikely to receive this warning from AdAware.

I am still using fat32, I never saw any overpowering reason to switch to NTFS.

Yes, I have just updated to the latest update, which is the same as DavidR’s [SE1R42 28-04-2005]. I have never had Ad-aware show me this result before [report avast as spyware]. Its Ad-aware SE Personal Build 1.05. Thanks I’ll do as suggested. My file system is NTFS.
