Avast 4 home destroyed my Windows 2000 Operating system

I installed Avast 4 and ran a virus scan, for the first time, on my hard drive. I let it run overnight and in the morning, I guess it had finished. I guess because there was no window that said it finished, just a blank desktop. When I rebooted my system I got a message saying that I had to re-insert my Window 2000 install disk to fix errors. I did that, then found out my printer was no longer working. MS Office was also no longer working and my system was running at about 1/20 normal speed. I tried to reinstall MS Office, but my CD was unable to read the DC. Basically my system has been destroyed.

Home version can’t be automatic, unless you’ve set Silent Mode.
Only the Professional version could be automatically deleted infected files and shutting down the system after scan.
So the blank desktop does not come because of avast.
Where you running a boot time scanning and set it to delete infected system files?

maybe your system was hardly infected before avast! installed. In these occasions is recommended to do “clean” install, as antivirus software is made more for prevention, and if needed for removal. But if where was hundreds of infected system files, any AV will be useless, even it might get infection during install. avast couldn’t kill your system. That’s for sure.

I wasn’t running “antomatic”. I simply started Avast, selected the hard drive and clicked on the start button, then went to bed. I expected to either see a screen that said I had no viruses, or a list of viruses in the morning. I have no idea what “boot time scanning” is, but I’m sure I was not doing that. Also my system was working just fine before the scan. My printer, CDs and MS Office all ran with no problems. Now nothing works.

So, avast! is not guilty… it can’t harm your system just scanning… It won’t delete any file, nothing…
You should have another problem/conflict in your system. Do you use any other antivirus?

When I installed avast I had Norton Antivirus and avast told me that I shouldn’t have any other anti virus. So I uninstalled Norton and ran the avast scan. Does an avast scan just end with no indication of what happened? That’s what happened on my system and that when my system stopped working.

After a scan avast home edition displays the results of the scan. The program does not close.

Hi just a line or two No way will avast do anything to your system or files you don’t want it too, NORTONS yes! Avast NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Did you have your computer set to go into standby, or hibernation?
When I rebooted my system I got a message saying that I had to re-insert my Window 2000 install disk to fix errors.
By "fix errors" what happened, did you re-install your win 2000 OS over the top of the existing setup? If so that's all I can see that would require you to have to re-install your printer, Cd drive, Ms office . Of course it's very upsetting that your system has crashed, but user error sounds like the cause. Sorry ...

This may well be due to a conflict with NAV and avast! NAV is a pig to get rid of even after an uninstall there is lots of debris left behind.
