Avast 4 Home Not updating. ISP no pings

Hi all,Love Avast :smiley:
Recently I noticed that Avast 4 Home did not seem to be updating.
I could update manually.
About the same I discovered that I could no longer ping anything.
I emailed my ISP and here is the reply:

Thank you for your inquiry

Due to the current outbreak with Worms and Viruses. Aliant has blocked
all PING functions to assist in stopping the unnecessary traffic
caused by these viruses and worms.

From previous posts I see that avast depends on pings to check for an internet connection.
I am using a always on dsl connection.
Is there a way to make avast Home ignore the pings and just try to update?
