Avast 4 not wanting to update

My uncles Laptop which runs Windows XP SP2 has had no problems updating the programs and viruses , until recently. Looking at this myself I think I have found a pattern, when the updates starting to fail (5/03/2005) Windows XP had automatically installed several hotfixes on the 4/3/2005. The thing is I don’t have the KB numbers to hand as I don’t have the laptop with me.

I have disabled the Windows XP Firewall against the dial up connection but this has made no difference and avast reports cannot connect to server and in the log it brings up download14.avast.com as one of the failed connections.

Can anyone please help. I have tried to find answers in the forums but no joy

Are you using any other firewall?
If yes, did you allow avast.setup to connect the Internet?

Can’t you manually update?
I think the last XP Hotfixes and patches do not affect avast update behavior…

No other firewall installed, I have even set up avast so that it knows that it is using a dial up. Avast was downloaded from the site and then installed locally.

No , not even manual updates work. Any other ideas?

If you do not use a firewall, basically, check:

  1. If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired).

  2. Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

It wont have expired as it has only been installed at the beginning of this year.

It does seem strange though that it has just stopped working, hence my thoughts on the hotfixes being installed. However I will try what you have suggested and come back with the outcome.

Teamaker, is there any other problem in your computer with the Internet?
I mean, can you browse, send and receive mail, update other programs, etc.?

I have only just sorted this out as I had to deal with the laptop else where and then return home ;).

You suggestion to switch off work offline worked. My Uncle was able to browse the net has he is using FireFox. However he did use IE before and it is very possible he used this by accident while off line and then just chose work offline when it couldn’t connect.

Thank you for your help.

Keep up the good work, I also use avast and to me it is miles better than any other anti virus product I have used (not going to mention the names :-X )
