Avast 4 won't install

When I try to install Avast 4 Professional Edition after double clicking the startup icon I get an error message
“An Error 2 (00000002) has occurred. Last performed operation was spawning” I am trying to load this software on a Pentium III running Windows 98. How do I get this software to run? ???

The windows file system error 2 = The system cannot find the file specified.

What start-up icon ?
avast is a resident scanner and as such should start automatically. The avast desktop icon is normally used to either start avast in safe mode (by default it doesn’t) or to run an on-demand scan.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

The problem was a free home version had been removed but not completely. This version had been removed with the add/remove feature in control center but the folders and files remained. Somehow they conflicted with the new install causing the error. When the folder and files were removed the software loaded without a problem. Thank you for the info on previous AV software. I would never have thaught this to be the problem. Good job.

No problem, glad I could help.

Always one to consider remnants of a previous AV, though it is a little strange that it related to avast ;D

Welcome to the forums.

Welcome and Enjoy of your AV

Hello

I have the same problem, i cant to fix this antivirus. An error 2 (00000002) has ocurred last performed operation was spawning.

What can i do? i tried to fix it from panel control but i was no possible.

Do a clean reinstall:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Hello thanks for the instructions.

i going to try it becuase i am so worried about it. the computer is so slow
