Avast! 4home download errors

Hello:
I had a similar problem as JLG lately with Avast! 4home not loading properly and getting the “RPC Error”. I followed the FAQ suggestions and performed a repair, but nothing changed. So, I figured since I have a registration key, I’ll just uninstall Avast, re-download and start over.

I did a “run” of the download and got a Window’s error stating that the Publisher was unknown and lacking a digital signature?? So, I saved the setup file and tried running it again and I get this on the self extract:

“An error 1006 (0000003EE) has occurred. Last performed operation was: opening the self-extract archive. Try to download setup file again. If you use IE clear it’s cache”

Cache is cleared, and still nothing. I do have Automatic updates set for Windows. Do you think something came out where it won’t let us use “free” antivirus programs anymore?

Granted, my PC is older than dirt and I’m do for an upgrade, but I am running XP if that has any bearing. I have had several IE shut downs as of late too. Could this possibly be more of a corrupt Windows program rather than Avast?

Any helpful suggestions out there?

Thanks!

We will need more information to be able to help you:

  • Is your Windows updated?
  • Do you use a firewall? Which one?
  • Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system? Did you have in the past?
  • Any other security programs that could interfere?
  • Any useful information into Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Events, specially ‘Errors’.

Hi Tech - here’s what I know:

  1. Windows is up to date (Im set for automatic and I just checked that were good)
  2. I thought Avast! WAS a firewall…or had one built in to it?
  3. There is no other anti-virus installed on here. I may have had Norton back many, many years ago, but I’ve successfully been using Avast for atleast 4-5 yrs now
  4. No other security that I am aware of
  5. There’s a lot of events in there–couple thousound in Applications, System and Security, nothing in IE. Majority of things listed look “successful” but there are some errors in Applications and System. Doesn’t tell much else?

No, it’s an antivirus only. It’s not a suite, it’s not a firewall.

  1. Remove all Symantec products (NAV, LiveUpdate…) through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info or here.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.

Any info that could help?
