Avast 5 .0.396 Update Failure

I am using Avast 5 Free Version 5.0.396. Windows XP Home Sp3. I use Dial-up. I installed the program several days ago and it has yet to automatic update Virus Definations or Program. It will do so manualy. I have set it up, I believe correctly. I have checked the dial-up box. Any suggestions?

What are your update settings under “Update Parameters” re connections?

Also, what firewall are you using?

They are set at “I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem”

My firewall is Zone Alarm Free Version

You might try clearing those two checkboxes and let avast! determine for
itself what type of connection you have.

What is the update interval you have set? Note that any change to the
interval probably won’t take effect until after avast! is restarted.

I will try that and reboot. I changed the interval to 60 minutes while I am working with it. I will get back to you after this.

I have the same problem xp sp3, avast 5.0.396 free. No matter what settings i put it onto or what settings i change in the firewall (Also Zonealarm) it won’t do auto updates but manual ones are fine if i leave the proxy setting (auto detect IE setting or something long those lines). Even if i change the update interval it wont even attempt an auto update

The minimum interval for the free version is two hours, anything less and it is ignored.

However dial-up being what it is I believe it will check every time you connect, it used to do that in 4.8 so the interval is meaningless unless you stay on-line for longer than the minimum interval.

Thanks, I will give it time to update after making those changes even if it is 2+ hours.

Well, I believe that the Automatic Downloading is working. Like you said it would be two hours on the free version. It checked it after two hours. Of course no download because it hadn’t been long since I did it manually. I will check it tomorrow and see if it’s working ok and report back. Thanks everyone for your help.

Avast 5 Automatic Updates

I am glad to report that the suggestion made to be from this topic worked. It checks every two hours. A window popped up today and said that it had been updated. I will probably change it to the default 240 minutes. Thanks to all.
