I have a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit and am finding that when I right click a file to scan it, I am told that Avast is not running. I have looked in Services and Avast is set to Automatic in the Startup Type, yet it does not start with Windows.
Is there a workaround, or is there a problem with my setup?
I did initially have the latest version of AVG installed, but found it unsuitable for my needs. It was uninstalled through Control Panel and the AVG folder no longer exists. That’s not to say there are not any remnants, but why would they stop Avast from simply loading at startup?
Just a further update, after using the AVG removal tool and rebooting, Avast would still not load at startup, so I then uninstalled Avast and then reinstalled it. When I rebooted, the program again failed to load at startup.
Let me tell you my setup, as it may have something to do with it.
I have a SSD as my system/boot drive. Only the OS is installed on this drive. I then have an external drive that has all of my programs and data. This external drive is partitioned to keep things separate.
I am not sure if this would make a difference, as other programs that need to load in the system tray are loading fine. I also have MS Security Essential installed and running in the background.
I would have though ‘fail’ to start was self explanatory.Windows starts and the program does not. I can certainly run avastui.exe from the folder or from the start menu, but of what value is an antivirus program that must be manually started each time you turn your computer on?
Every AV program I have ever used loads at startup, like old TSRs. It then lives and works in the background from the system tray.
Is this not haw avast is meant to work? Is the program meant to be manually started each time I turn my pc on?
Well avast has two main elements, avastSvc.exe the main avast service and avastUI.exe the user interface (tray icon, etc.).
Now it is possible that the tray icon isn’t displayed or loaded, but the avastSvc.exe service should load automatically, where the avastUI is a user startup item.
So is avastSvc.exe running ?
Other security applications have functions that may block new startup items, I have never used MSE and I don’t know if it has such a function to check startup items ?
The other thing to consider having MSE run in the background (resident) means that you have two resident AVs installed at the same time and that in itself can cause conflict. That however, I don’t believe would present itself in this way.
As we all know(or maybe not ;D ),running two AV in the same time can sometimes be disastrous for the PC,or windows cannot boot anymore.MSE is a FULL AV software.I suggest you to uninstall it if you want Avast running normally. If not, leave MSE but don’t install any other AV.
