I’m running a Dell Dimension 3 GHz machine with 2 G RAM and WinXP Pro SP2.
I’m running Avast 5.0.594 which seems to run properly with one exception. Every once in a while I’ll see the orange ball in the system tray with a slash through it saying Avast is not protecting my system. I have to right click and go to Open Avast User Interface and change the system status to secured. Then all is OK for awhile (3-4 days?) and the same thing happens again. Do I have a setting wrong? I have Avast on two other computers running WinXP Pro and never have this problem on them.
Windows firewall, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes antimalware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware, and SpywareBlaster, but none of these except the firewall are running unless I run them.
Shields: Scan inbound messages, scan web HTTP traffic, and show warning messages.
Get rid of Spybot SD as many people have reported problems with it. If you also have this on your other machines and they are doing fine, then I suggest a clean install. Let me know if your other machines also have Spybot and if MBAM and SAS are resident or on-demand.
Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.0 and 5.0).
Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs”.
Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
Reboot twice.
Clean your computer up (clean up cache, etc.).
Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.
Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro or AIS.
I did all of the steps you suggested and Avast seems to be running OK. Now all I can do is see if it is cured or goes back to the same stopping. I’ll post to let you know. It might take a few days.
Well, it’s been a week now and Avast hasn’t stopped. I think SafeSurf’s solution just might have worked. Thank you very much. If it starts acting up again, I’ll be back.
