AVAST 5.0.954 Still unsolved problem with automatic update of virus-data-base.

I am rather desperated now.
As always working on my PC with AVAST 4.8 free a message a window appeared a week ago to update for new Free-version
5.0.954. Unfortunately I did.
Soon I found out, the automatic update didn´t work. Message: No connection to the server !
I read all the instruction for fixing this problem here on the forum. I tried it all. With the AVAST removal tool and so also several new-installations. No Proxy… and all the settings recommoned here…invain. CC-cleaner…nothing.
Firewall Windows and Ashampo enabled for AVAST 5.0.954 !
Even if I turn them out, the same problem persits. No automatic update, connecting to (AVAST) servers failed.

But I am fortunately able to go to Windows/ Control/Programs/AVAST/ selecting “Update” and getting my newest Virus.data.
Then I go maintenance / Sevices(local)/and click in the list on AVAST to restart the program. Done ! AVAST is then updated with the newest virus-data-base.

I am running a DELL PC with XP-home 2002, 2 GB ram. Virus free and all updated. Service Pack 3
PC-time also fine.

Here the log. info :

Help from insiders appreciated. I know only little about this PC-things.

There are many such instances like this in conjunction with Ashampoo firewall. I don’t know if this is an underlying flaw in the firewall. In general terms it isn’t advised to have both the windows firewall and 3rd party firewall enabled at the same time.

Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

If that doesn’t work, many of those with this problem have seen it disappear when they uninstalled ashampoo and installed another firewall.

Many forum users are using these:

  • PC Tools Firewall seems to have the least user headaches as it doesn’t seem to be constantly asking the user questions about this and that.
  • Online Armor for the most parts fine but it has caused some users grief after avast program updates and that is something you have to watch out for.
  • Outpost Firewall 2009 free, a cut down version of the Outpost Firewall Pro version, which should still provide good protection, http://free.agnitum.com/. Download, http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/

Thank you so much !

I uninstalled ASHAMPO firewall and now AVAST 5.0.954 works perfect.
It made its 1st. automatic update and a nice sound when it finished. Great !
You can´t imagine how happy I am about that. AVAST is so quick and needs only
little CPU, even works better than 4.8 version. Now I will install OUTPOST Firewall as you recommended me.
Good job, my friend.

You’re welcome.
