Now that I have avast! 5.0 Free functioning without problems, I would like to install one of the free firewalls that are available. I have searched the forum messages and found a very informative message thread concerning which firewalls work best with avast! The ones that were mentioned were PCTools Firewall Plus, Online Armor Free, and Outpost Free. Unfortunately, the messages in the thread were all written before the release of avast! version 5 and, therefore, apply specifically to avast! 4.8
Does anyone have a recommendation about which of the above three firewalls work well with avast 5 ?? Looking for confirmation that whatever one I install won’t conflict with version 5 of avast!.
doesn’t make much difference I think whether some versions of those firewalls were delivered before avast 5 came out… latest versions came very shortly before V5 anyway. On my side, I’ve been using Comodo Firewall for a while together with Avast 4, and it runs just as fine with V5. They don’t interfere that much with each other (I’m of of course not using the AV part of CIS), apart from the fact that the firewall must allow avast services to connect (WebShield, Mail scanner), never saw any conflict; I heard some did, but it just didn’t happen to me. I’ve tried Avast 4 with PCTools firewall, works fine too. We’re talking free firewalls that’s why I’m not mentioning Avast new firewall here, but it’s also a very interesting option with a new approach that I like very much, even if it’s still work in progress
I tried Comodo but found it to be overly reactive in regards to alerts and my having to accept and OK all kinds of subfiles…which the program quite often couldn’t remember later! I have free versions Online Armor and Outpost Firewall on two different computers and have been quite happy with them. Doesn’t take very long to get them trained and the alerts have been minimal. I doubt if you would have any trouble with either of them working with A5
I use PC Tools Personal Firewall Plus on My Xp Home Computer without any problems…
I have friends in Chile and since they have slow Pentium II with XP home Computers and they use the Windows Firewall and have never reported a problem, they’re better now with Avast 5.
Avast 5 is ligther than 4.8 and they repor the computer is faster now… rm
I have installed Avast 5 yesterday on my win2k system and it looks as everything workes fine. Me too, I am looking now for a matching free firewall.
According the answers here, I would have choosen Comodo, but it seems to work only form XP and higher. So there is Outpost Pro 2009, but on the german download page they say, that one should not download it anymore, because there is no more developing on it and they recommend Kerio but they say also, that the use is not simple.
Could anyone please give me hints for a simple to set up, but effective free firewall which matches Avast5 on Win2k?
